Building on an expired domain is risky to say the least. You need really good one relevant to your niche if you have already chosen the niche.
And you need shitload of content which will cost way more than the domain price itself. But if it worked, you will bank good
SEO as a whole became risky game to say the least. I would advice focusing on better stream of traffic
One less competitor lol

I bought an aged domain once. Lots of backlinks but it doesn't seem to do any good. Same as fresh domain.
So how often does SEO inherit like that? Could my case be because the old site was about IT and the new is about marketing?

Go for aged domain with good history of backlinks, anchor texts and archives. And, be sure that would be a expired domain, not a dropped one!

No hidden penalty. Its fresh so you know its 100% clean.
Aged domain with backlinks is great but even with a clean backlink profile and history....who knows what hidden algo penalty it may or may not have received in the past.
So aged domain with backlinks is good but you need to be 110% certain it is a clean domain and even some of the best at spotting these things are not 100% accurate.

Anyone who knows their onions will say aged domain.
I'm currently working on my first auction domain but it isn't going as well as I was hoping.
4-5 months in and not a huge amount of content (30 pages). So still early days.
But I can see spots where I have made some mistakes so I'm hoping once it's all tidied things will improve.
I'm saying all this to point out that because it's a auction domain doesn't guarantee success.

And what do you expect with 30 pages? What have you been doing during the past 5 months? I already have 250 pieces of content for my latest site and I haven't even launched it.

Wow that is a lot of content! Are you writing all that yourself?
You are right my friend.
What's holding me back is the costs of the articles.
These are all 4-5k word article and I'm paying $20 per 1000 words.
I wish I had a much larger budget. If I can sell this down the line my next project will be much better funded.

Oh, God, no. I haven't written any content myself for years now.
Having nice long articles is definitely not a bad choice. You can get pretty decent 7+/10 quality writers on Upwork for $1.5/100.
And if you are short on budget, pick an easier niche and focus on shorter articles.
If you have suitable option this way will be the best

aged domains, but not with just a lot of backlinks (google might see it like spam, especially if those links are coming from low-life websites), but with backlinks from the HQ top websites like forbes, nyt, entrepreneur, government, etc... check their broken links anchors and publish articles on your website to mimic those anchors. One backlink from forbes will have more weight (in google eyes) than 100.000 backlinks from low quality websites.

Yeah you are right.
Finding suitable niches Is the hardest part for me.
Luckily I have some smaller sites to also focus on and pump the proceeds into the bigger project.
Hopefully the big one works out as the payoff will be much bigger.
