Advertising in magazines?

Every time I sit on the crapper and read my magazines, I think about taking out an advertisement in there, pointing to my landing page for a CPA offer or something. But ad space in widely read niche magazines seems to be pretty expensive; I'd be looking at $150 for even a small text ad.

It's not that I don't want to take action, it's just that I want to know if this has a chance of working before I drop $100+ on it... My IM funds are already limited as it is.

If anyone has tried taking out ads in magazines or newspapers, I'd love to hear how that worked out for you. Thanks!

I took out a decent sized advert (for an adult dating site) in FHM magazine a couple of years ago, which is aimed mainly at horny young guys. Cost me a few hundred pounds and thought i would get a decent return in sales. Didnt get one!! Has a huge readership too.

Im not saying it doesnt work, it just didnt for me.

Tried this for a free trial offer in one of the country's (US) biggest finance magazines, it worked quite well. It's more expensive then $150 though, it all depends on the niche.

I've seen past clients who use direct mailings absolutely kill it with them. The only bummer about it is they are so expensive to produce and you never know when they're tossed in the garbage.
