Autumn, it sounds like the 504 issue you have is due to the page timing out. The reason it works after you refresh is because then MySQL has cached the results and can display it immediately. Basically if a page takes longer than 20 or 30 seconds to load, it's going to 504. We don't allow connections to remain open for longer than that. If you're using SubID stats, those stats can be pretty slow to load and cause that problem. 504s can also be caused just by rapid-fire traffic from your IP. For people visitng the gateway it won't be an issue.
Your issue with conversion rates though is not one that we're seeing network-wide. In fact we see no drop in conversion rates. Our no-scrub submits are still converting at 27%.
