ADHD & Work - Hard To Focus):

I have ADHD as well, so I know how difficult it can be to sit down and work for a long period of time. If I don't go into hyperfocus, then the chances are that I won't sit still for more than half an hour.

There's no real solution to force yourself to focus if you have ADHD. The only thing that could help in this regard is ADHD medication - this doesn't work for everyone, but I find that it's helpful for me.

If medication isn't an option for you, then you've got to look at ways to manage how you work. You can't sit still and focus for hours on end, so there's no point trying. But what you can do is find a way to organise your workload so that you are working around your weaknesses instead of trying to ignore them.
  • You can try dividing your work into bullet points and ticking them off as you finish each task.
  • You can schedule a break every now and then to give your brain time to rest, so that it can focus more easily.
    • This can be combined with the point above really well, where every time you finish a task, you can take a break to reward yourself.
  • If you find yourself stuck on one particular task, don't beat yourself up about trying to finish it. Just leave it and do the other tasks that you've got to do. Hopefully, you'll be able to come back to it later and have a better idea of what to do.
  • When there's one piece of work that you really need to do but can't figure out, talking through it with someone else can be helpful. Obviously, you won't always have someone readily available to infodump on, but if the option is there for you then I'd say it's worth a shot.

i take multiple things for adhd / and self control issues
its not easy , leaves me cranky alot of the time so i focus
on 1 thing , no work, no pay. and just have to get on with things.

I use the break every 15 minutes method. I cannot focus for longer than that. Literally not possible.

I have ADHD, OCD, and anxiety. These are not things i took a one page form fillout at the psych office to get diagnosed with but rather went through hours of eval., therapy, etc before they were given.

I was offered every drug in the book and did dabble for a bit, but it just made it absoluetly clear to me :

UNLESS YOU CANNOT LIVE YOUR LIFE WITHOUT MEDICATION, IT WILL RUIN YOU.

I.e I have OCD that probably impacts me 2-3 hours a day in terms of being 75 instead of 100 percent or even not being there at all for 30 second intervals. That is severe yes, BUT I can live life with natural treatments, meditation, mindfullness, and cogntiive behavioral therapy's and get over that.

My friend is clinically bipolar. When he gets off his meds he becomes angry , violent, suicidal, and is absolutely scary. He cannot live a regular or even 80 percent of his life without meds.

I would recommend anyone dealing with ADHD to began reading Dr joe dispenza and books on neuroplasticity, as well as learning about basic mindfullness, meditation, AND physical exercise is absolutely critical, for me yoga , bikram yoga, was a life saver. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the next step once your able to focus on yourself and step away from your disorder in a sense.

The best way i can put it is like this;

Whenever i have an OCD episode, I almost dissassociate myself to another objective person inside of me, who says This is simply a chemical imbalance in your brain. A part of your brain is misfiring and that is it, you do not need to pay attention to this, you do not need to acknowledge, objetively accept the reality you are suffering from the symptom of a chemical imbalance and move on.

Hopefully that makes sense, in a sense that is what cognitive behavioral therapy has given me the ability to do.

Also one more important thing. YOU WILL NEVER FULLY DEFEAT THESE FEELINGS, IF YOU TRY YOU WILL FAIL.

All succesfull therapy has one common foundation, negative thoughts and adhd/ocd whatever will occur no matter what, however it is your reaction to it that dictates whether it impacts your life or not. Mindfulness teaches this well, being able to let thoughts just go past without youa cknowledging them is the key to living an life that is not impacted by your ADHD.

Hope this helps at least one person!

First off congrats on becoming closer to success.

I'm a huge advocate of natural methods especially for health. And it seems like you should first focus on your diet. It's astounding how underappreciated food is in our society. We view eating merely just as a chore, but it's essential to a sound body and mind.

Eliminate added sugars in your food and drinks. If you must drink coffee, drink it black. You'd be astounded about how many benefits are actually in coffee.

Meditate, like people said before. You don't need fancy apps or "hommms" like in the movies. Just focusing in on your breathe is meditation. Doing this in a quiet room is quite nice.

Take necessary breaks. There's actual studies that show taking breaks between intervals of work is actually beneficial to productivity.

Lastly, just remember you're in a pretty good place right now and continue developing your skills.

Remember to have fun as well; "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"

Great point cant believe i forgot arguably the most important thing, DIET. And it is amazing how many people do a breathing exercise and realize it has been years since they actually took a real breath. Thank you for the additional info its spot on.

do All of the above, and try to have a diet mostly Vegetables, leguminous and fruits, I can concentrate more, and my brain is a lot more clear....

You should take a morning cold shower, It will clear your brain fog and you'll be more focused

Everyone has been recommending that on these threads lately, pretty interesting lol.

What I usually do is simple just have a "To Do" task somewhere you will ALWAYS be checking (could be in front of you, in my case I jsut use Google Keep and thats it)

Then, organize the task you need to get done, give them a priority order and then go ahead and just start attacking them during the day. Replan and rethink the tasks everyday and make sure you keep going at them

Just meet some good friends. They are the best medicine in the world.

Not diagnosed with ADHD, but whole lotta other disorders lol. Cold shower, pushups, and small amount of weed the trick for me. Fine line between smoking enough to be productive and too much though

No one should give any advice about an illness unless there a professional doctor in that field.

I can only suggest seeing your doctor
All illness need treatment, and professional guidance .

You might need medication or just good diet or exercise but consult a professional

Good luck

This is good too.

I also suggest you to write the exact time when you have to do a task, for example:

"I clean my house at 3:30 PM" (Remember to split the big task in smaller ones)

Well good on your mr AceCanoe. You've achieved what you desire so deep down that people think you're 1MJoshC. But youre not. your name is a ripoff, your profile picture is ripped off and I don't want to know what else is. You've already got @Mr Cracker fooled. Who's next?

Sounds good in theory, reallistcally speaking im not sure if this would be achievable lol!

I consider myself "decently organized" and with my "to do list" im able to attack the tasks I have during the day. But its way too hard to keep track of the exact timeframes, theres always something that come sup (bumps or delays , etc) and then everything will get screwed.

What I would suggest is just "give a certain time to each task" lets say "30m for x" and "1hr for Y" and then do them on those timeframes and STOP as soon as you as you have reached the time :)!

When there's so much work to do, it's hard to get one thing done. I try having coffee (to try to focus) but it makes me more hyper.

It's VERY hard to sit down at a desk and stare a screen for hours and trying to get all of your work done.

What would you do in this case? I'm still trying to everything done but it's a slow process due to my ADHD and my focus.

I have ADHD as well, I'm pretty sure when my mother gave birth to me, the doctors immediately said "This boy got some ADHD, inject some adderall in him now!"

Joking aside, I was on ritalin from age 7-14, then switched over to vyvanse for about 3 years, stopped taking medication in high school cause I felt anti-social when taking the meds and was just way too calm. Somehow graduated high school.

Then started uni and did shitty for first 2 semesters. I decided to go back and be put on meds and started taking Adderall. Honestly, this is the only reason I ended up finishing my degree (although it never helped me out in life).

I honestly can't focus on shit if I don't take it, I try to take it only on certain days so I don't have to rely on it too much.

When I'm not on it, I'm jumping from project to project, then starting a new project without finishing my last 2 projects.

Anyway, moral of the story. Have you tried medication for ADHD? It could be very helpful for you. It does have it side effects though.

Honestly, as morbid as this sounds. When I'm on it, I feel so careless. As in, someone could rob me gunpoint and I just would have no emotions.

However, it's a wonder drug for me. IF you decided to go this route, don't expect your first script to work for you. Different brands effect me differently Just have to find the perfect one.

Cheers

OP like you i have adhd but I also have autism really I don't know if it's my autism or adhd but i tend to move my legs a lot as a way of countering that. I also think you should get adderal

That does no shit to aid one with adhd trust me a tried

I have ADHD and I find it helps if I rotate tasks often.
Sitting in one place to long can make me feel uneasy.
I also find sometimes calmer type pod-casts or talks while working are more inducive to concentration then loud music, but maybe that's just my aging. :p
