But regardless, I think we can all agree that doing it server-side through .htaccess (like OP described) is far better than doing it through robots.txt.

Nice post OP, I too have come to disregard DA & PA metrics as useful. However, I do usually filter for DA ~ 5ish to to weed out a lot of garbage and save time. I realize I probably miss some gems, but the time I save is worth it!

Really good guide, fast, simple, to the point. Perfect really. One thing I've been doing is purchasing expired domains from pbnhq, they look pretty legit but they are costly ($5-25 USD)

Would you mind giving us a tutorial or a link to one where we can get our own expired domains or how to do it properly?
