A New Author Appeared on WP Blog??!! WTF???

I just logged in as admin on one of my blogs and I just happened to look under "users" and I see some dudes name and he is labeled an "Author"...WTF?? My admin name is below his as "administrator" but I have no clue who this dude is. Anyone have a clue what would cause this? A hacker?

I uploaded some PLR articles...could this have something to do with it? But then how would WP know who the author was?

Strange..but just thought I'd ask BHW before I nuke him.

Are you autoblogging? Some scripts will add new users to post as.
 
yeah.. I've the same problem once. The "user" even did some postings. The post is about promoting "Affiliate Idol" (something like that).

That happened when i was using WP2.6.1

Not sure if it's something to do with xampp installed on my computer.

I asked my hosting provider.. they have no clue about it and they even said this "It's not possible that WP get hacked".

Oh yes... I've no other fancy plugins on my wp website. Just seo plugin , feedburner

as i know wp 2.6.1 has vulnerability issues....i read it some where here..people can easily login to your wp-admin by using sql injection....i not remember which thread.
 
If you weren't autoblogging where users are created in some cases as some have pointed out, I would suggest you upgrade to WP 2.6.5 or better yet 2.7.

Anything below that is quite easy to get into the admin panel and do as you please. There are sql injection vulnerabilities that are quite easy to exploit.

FYI, 2.6.1 had sql injection vulnerabilities so I would upgrade to 2.6.5 or 2.7. If possible always install on a test system 1st to make sure of compatibility of plugins and themes beforehand.

yeah... sometimes it's sux... once we upgrade to the latest ver... some plugins will not work... so we need to wait for the new updates (plugin)
 
Yeah it seemed 2.61 was riddled with errors thank god for 2.7.. also check your htaccesses file could have an opening there.
 
Thanks guys. My host doesnt have the latest version on WP as a one click install, so Ill have to update manually. I gave you all thanks....thanks for helping me out!

use wp upgrade plugin.. it'll automatically update for you.
