I don't think, I know when I have removed something.

I don't just use malwarebytes, I have dozens of programs that will remove all traces of spyware, malware, rootkits etc I've been doing this for the best part of 20 years.

Jumping straight to "format your hard drive, reinstall the operating system" is not the best advice because people have months and sometimes years of work on their computers. Solving the immediate issue can save a lot of long term hassle.

Suggesting to somebody you don't know to install a clean OS is IMO crazy, they may not have any of their work backed up. Yes there are big corporations that are infected daily and they pay ransoms but we are talking about an individual that doesn't have a tech support department and millions of $$$ to spare to turn to.

Straight up you have to restore all your files, reinstall and configure programs, you might run into driver issues with the new computer. Reinstalling a OS and getting everything back to exactly the way it was takes a good weekend at least and should only be used in worst case scenarios. The fact that this guy is asking how to remove viruses shows he doe not know too much about computers in the first place. That's like telling it only takes a few hours to rebuild an engine to someone who can't even change their oil.

If possible reinstall OS and after reinstallation scan with cureit(dr.WEB) .
Best and free as well.If don't want to change windows Just scan with Dr.Web(CureIt).
You can also use Avast Free version and set boot scan.

1. Scan your pc with tdss anti-root
2. malwarebytes
3. reset all your browsers

don't let noobs bother you, you were absolutely right!

@sturose: unless you are a very skilled security expert, you can't properly clean a system. just because you removed some simple RATs or spyware from friends computers (and left the real hidden stuff that doesnt show any obvious signs like popups), doesn't mean you did a good job as you likely just didnt notice the rest that wasn't detected by the "tons of programs". i'm into security since the 90s and did pen tests for fortune 500 companies, so i got my fair share of experience in this field. best practice is reinstall after compromise you can read that everywhere and its what every expert will suggest you. of course you can also clean systems and it might work out if you only have a known trojan on your box, but there is plenty of malware out there that uses tricks to avoid being detected by malwarebytes and AV's. so you can never be 100% sure its clean. especially if you are someone who isn't familiar with security and the technical side of how to backdoor windows and known attack vectors. nowdays there is malware that even survives OS reinstall by infecting the firmware of your harddrive, or the bios, so there is absolutely nothing your standard AV can do and its impossible for malwarebytes nor any AV to remove it from userland. hell even using vmware and setting the virtual OS back to restore points isn't safe these days, because as we learned from leaked nsa malware, it can elevate access to the host system and then hook all the restore points.....

I'm serious. I run CCleaner first before any anti-virus. Clean out all the unnecessary files so the anti-virus doesn't waste time scanning.
