There are wierd clients in all classes, I once made a simple nice website for a client coded in Codeigniter framework back in 2007, easy job took total 2-3 days, charged him around $2500 for it, 6-7 month later he hired a newbie coder that did not know how Codeigniter worked or what it was, the client then wanted to sue me for making up my own coding language .. Haha .. It worked out well later and he dropped the suing thoughts .. This was a high earning client in his 60s .. So better lookout for those folks .. =)

Take this as a business lesson. The first and most valuable thing you can do is ask yourself how you can improve your business practices so it doesn't happen again.

It's all about setting client expectations. For ongoing clients, it's so important to have meaningful conversations all the time so they understand the value you're delivering. Sounds like you forgot to nurture the relationship and this is the result. Learn from it and make sure you build time in your day / week / month to touch base and build client trust.

'High class' could be a precursor that your client is gay.
 
If a client is paying me $2k a month and $1k is profit for me, i will make sure he receives the best service and i over deliver him so he has no reasons to complain, i dont even mind going on a loss for a month or 2 in a year. I know Seo/web design operate on atleast 50% profit margins so if i was you i would have waived the cost of press release on this occasion. But that's just me, and how I operate.

May I ask around how many hours you dedicate to a client like that per week/month? would help me stimate the value of this market knowledge
 
I'm running an experiment on women's facebook groups. I stole your story and represented it as my own. It went well- they loved it. Hearts and laughing emojis all over the place.

Your guna lose clients at significant rates in my opinion by extorting them like that. And if you are not getting much profit from $500 on press release, someone is extorting you. I'm going to assume it's not the latter since your in the SEO business and can easily gauge the competitions price.

He’s charging him 24k a year! (HOLY COW!) I’d be offended if I payed that much money and was still charged extra for a press release (and $500!). Hmm, I don’t know what to think..
