A Basic Guide To Online Reputation Management

I am happy this report turned out to be so helpful for so many people over the years! It is amazing to see how much has changed in the field of Online Reputation Management since I wrote up this guide. It is also amazing to see that A LOT of the basic stuff I talk about in this guide still applies to anyone out there looking to start a proactive reputation management campaign.

Lately I have started writing down more of my ORM thoughts/processes/blueprints/strategies and I have started posting these ideas at http://www.ReputationManagementAdvice.com

I figured some BHW'ers would be interested in checking out the site if they are actively performing ORM campaigns for their clients and are interested in following ORM-related discussions and viewing different strategies proven to work over the years, etc. I am in the process of converting all of my notes, etc into easy to digest informative guides covering the different facets of ORM campaigns. TONS more advanced content is being added over the coming days/weeks/months, so be sure to bookmark the site if ORM is your thing!

I had to do a bit of online reputation management for myself quite recently when someone pointed out to me a very disturbing link with information about me on it. It had been floating around the net for over 2 years and I didn't know it existed. I kept it simple and created accounts in all major social networking sites and web 2.0s that I could think of, inserted my 'keywords' (my name + city) and then linked them all together. Within a week they all ranked and the bad link dropped to page 8. Phew!

Thanks for the information. Should be a "must-read" for small businesses, even those without an online presence.

I really did not know much about page reputation. It's really great that you have given us this chance to know all this. Thanks for the post again. And try to do further works like this.

I've updated the basic ORM guide to include some "advanced" strategies, like creating a Wikipedia page when possible, specific image and video websites to use, and many more suggestions. Probably worth a glance if you are into ORM at all, especially if you're actively performing client work etc (still a pretty "basic" guide, nothing too "fresh" for the veterans out there I suppose):

Hey Lisa, I'm glad you found the ORM Guides to be interesting! In terms of how much an online reputation management campaign will cost, it really does vary wildly. For example, small jobs could be completed for around 5k over a few months, while larger jobs will require a lot more content and labor, so they might cost 25k over 6 months to a year etc. It depends on the long-term objectives of the company and campaign in question.

To avoid situations like these, I always monitor posts that mention my brand name or my site.

I used to use google alerts for this, but now switched to buzzbundle, since it's faster and it creates a feed of relevant social posts.

Am into online reputation management for last few months and this share teaches me something, thank you jim. .

what happened to the links? I was getting excited to get more reading material, but the links are bad.

Got another few private msg's about this guide, thanks again and I appreciate the feedback. I apologize for the "plain" design of the guide, just focused on adding as much useful content as I can for right now. Recently I updated the online reputation guide with new sections that discuss taking advantage of the following for online branding purposes: online resume websites, content curation websites, list-building websites, hosting public events on event websites, and some other updates.

If you guys know of any websites that fit the above criteria that are not already listed in the guide, let me know and I will add them ASAP (assuming they're relevant of course)

So basically the important ideas are to be careful what content you post and where. Paying attention to privacy settings on sites plus being careful not to link one identity to another unless that's acceptable. 80% of people really don't want to bother with investing time to do that until there's a problem.
