I have the same question.
IMHO, from my little experience, I'd go light on that. I would rather start with a lot of nofollow from socials and forums, only branded and naked urls, then start with these links very very slowly (no more than 5% of the total monthly incoming links) while building few long-tail branded+exact kw dofollows.
Actually, it's be great if you morey expert guys could rate this process of mine.
