301 redirect question about dead domain names.

Looking for advice, since I never done this before:
I went to https://www.expireddomains.net, did a keyword search for the category I want. Found a dead domain with 4.7k in BL 200+ different domains giving those BL.

I can register a few domain names for under $10.

Do I still need webhosting? Or can I set a 301 redirect to my cash site from registering the domain?

Bonus round: since that domain was abandoned, and I don't know why. Is it possible that I could be opening myself to being blacklisted for spam, get caught up into some ongoing DDoS attack, or google dropping my rank because of a 301?

I went into the wayback machine and saw one site that looks readable.. and the other is just a mess left over from 1998 or older.

Several experiment done by reputable SEOers like Charles Floate (LOL) suggests that it is better to do a 301 at the hosting level than at the registrar level, so you will need an hosting and do the redirection from you Htaccess file, use this code for the redirection

RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule ^/file\.html$ - [L]

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]



Bonus Answer: To be on the safer Side (Ofcourse, there is no safe side when it comes to blackhat,LOL) make sure you check the backlinks very well and ensure that they are not spammy in nature, also correspond the backlinks anchors to the contents you saw on web.archive.com, if both are not spammy, then there are likelihoods the domain name isnt backlisted for spam and you woudlnt get dropped on google if they have a nice backlink structure.

I would add some content on these expired domains and see how they do before trying anything else. If it doesn't rank for easy kw's within a few weeks to a month, then the 301 would only do harm.
