Recently checking my backlinks i found pretty interesting project answeregy.com which was linking to me.
I like to analyse other projects so did fast check of traffic and backlinks profile. I was amazed how fast it grows

In the end of January it didn't has even 100 organic visitors according to Semrush

And you can see how much it has now.
I was curious how do they reach that so i went and check what was their backlinks growing and here's what i saw

What a hockey stick, right? Well i think it's almost impossible to get so much links in short period of time unless you have a team of link-builders and/or you have a deep pockets.
Digging a bit deeper we see that a lot of links comes from 301 redirect (discoverdome.org.au, sydneycityprestige.com.au, loginleader.com, consumerdatastandards.com...). So fascinating apparently 301 works as charm which i was doubt about.

In most threads on BHW i see that people suggest to do 301 redirect very carefully, restoring previous content, merging it with your project etc. Almost everyone is pointing on Neil Patel and Backlinko, but is it worth to do so much work if somebody just bought a bunch of domains and reach such a great results?

I'm not to good in SEO, just learning so for me this case is just another step in getting better, hope it will be useful for other too

P.S: What you guys think about it? Can such project be sustainable or it will die fast? Is this approach profitable?

You never just "buy a bunch of domains".

You buy extremely relevant domains with ridiculous backlink profiles for 4 figures+ each. And even then you try not to overdo it. 2 - 3 redirects and that's that.

And yes, it work if done correctly. It might take months for the redirect to reach the full effect, but eventually, it will.

Of course there will be a massive backlink boost in the statistics and that's the reason why you are making the 301 look as legit as possible.

You have acquired a competitor's business and you have now redirected it to your money site. Where is the issue with that? :)

Redirects work, but if you redirect domains to the home page - it's a bad strategy, there must be logic.
I like the serp.co approach better.

While @Nargil is right, not a lot of us have 4 figures to spare on buying domains like that.

I did 301 two decent domains i bought ( dropped ) straight to my homepage. By decent I'm saying DA8-10 and 20-30 RDs.

In my case, it was enough to get my main site out there, somewhere, and not get stuck with fresh articles on page 6.

It's true, domains cost cosmos. But since I spend a lot of time with auctions, keeping track of what happened to the hundreds of domains we failed to buy - I don't see many successful cases with redirects to the home page.

At the same time, when it comes to redirecting to the internal page - I see a lot of successful cases.

For example, the domain learn-about-tea.com with DR 28, 360RD, was bought for $5K.
After the purchase, the domain was redirected to the recipes.net/drinks/tea/ page.

Or

ifaf.org->serp.co/archive/football/.

If you redirect to the home page, your primary domain can get google filters from another domain.

The primary domain may loose positions because the redirect may change topics due to inappropriate anchors.

In addition, expired domains are likely to lose links faster if redirected to the home page.

@Dmytros why would the home page links lose juice if you redirect home page to home page and inner pages to inner pages?

Also, what is the serp.co method?

Lack of relevancy. Your primary topic of your homepage is, in most cases, your "brand".

So if you have a website called cocacola.com and you redirect a massive website called pepsicola.com to your homepage, what's gonna happen? Absolute mess. What is your brand now? Coca cola, pepsi cola? What is it?

Because you have 50% of branded anchors "Coca Cola" and the other 50% "Pepsi Cola" and there's no mention about Pepsi cola anywhere on your site. At least not to an extent of the Coca cola.

If instead you make a page about "Ey, look, we purchased a competitor's Pepsi cola business" and redirect it there, it makes much more sense and you won't confuse the search engines.

What if you re-establish the site to match your main site, then send some new links to create relevancy?

Also, Backlinko Bought PointBlankSEO and he said his traffic increased big time after that.

What's the point of overcomplicating it like this? You are creating a dozen more points of failure. Just write one article, do proper internal links and redirect the domain. That's all you have to do.

I didn't find any logic in this particular case. All domains mentioned are redirected to homepage from totally different niches, no relevancy IMHO

I don't get it, why it works so well, maybe i'm wrong but it's not so hard to reach DA8-10 and 20-30RDs, if you don't mind can you disclose the cost for this 2 domains?

For example, the domain learn-about-tea.com with DR 28, 360RD, was bought for $5K.
Insane price. Is it profitable at all to buy domains for that money?

answeregy seems to be doing fine with non relevant domains pointed to their home page

Because it's a spam site without a clear topic in a spammy niche. Not sure I would call it niche, it's a catdog. Rules are fairly different there.

Google considers spam a default in the search engine for that particular niche/multiniche, whatever that site is.

I am not talking about exceptions, because there's always an exception to every rule.

With enough backlink firepower, you won't need as much relevancy and vice versa.

i have my competitor in home cinema installation nice. he 301ed an expired domain of tv repair website, directly to his homepage, and it works very fine. i think the narrower you get close to the niche, the better you get the results

You know, I used to think it was incredibly expensive too, but let's calculate how much will it cost us to get 100 good backlinks? The cost of guest posts + the cost of writing + outreach guy + work of SEO specialist + time.

Well yeah, but looks like buying expired domains for 301 redirect requires a lot of experience, doubt that domains with expensive guest posts will be selling for 5K, probably prices will be much higher.

Anyway this is interesting topic for me, probably i will give it a try when i have a decent budget and a plan)

Looks like you still need deep pockets to buy all those domains and 301 them to your site.
Another point is bounce rate. It should be pretty high considering user is not landing where he initially intended to.

did anyone tried to 301 redirect only two or three internal pages of old domain to your money-site?
Say, you have an old domain which has mix content about "kitchen appliances or electronics" and your new money site is about kitchen blender/mixer only. Now, if you have an article posted on old domain about blenders, and you 301 redirect only single article to your new money site about blenders. How will this work?

Whether it is necessary to restore and age the expired domain name content before performing 301 redirection? Or do you directly perform a 301 redirect after purchasing an expired domain name?
Has there been a noticeable change in the rankings and traffic of the niche site after a 301 redirect?

Nah....paying 4 figures on a single expired domain is retarded nowadays....better option is to take that 4 figures find 30 mid authority websites that are active and relevant to you niche and pay for an article on those websites. Your ROI will be 10x.
