I have a portfolio of sites in the same niche.

Some of these sites don't provide positive ROI so further investment in them makes no sense. I would like to 301 them to the flagship sites instead of simply taking them offline.

What is the best method to do it to get the most value?

Do I do the 301 only on the domain level: siteA.com to siteB.com?

Do I do the 301 from different authoritative pages on siteA to the homepage of siteB? example siteA.com/xyz to siteB.com?

Thank you in advance.

If the pages have the same names, you can handle it at the domain level. If not, it’s better to redirect the indexed pages from the old site to the relevant pages on the new site.

Different authoritative pages from siteA to the homepage of siteB will be better for you.

Depends on whether you want to keep the content or not. If you want to 301 SiteA.com to SiteB.com with content then SiteA.com/article1 gets redirected to SiteB.com/article1 (of course only do this with pages that have backlinks or are ranking in the SERPs). And then 301 the homepage to either SiteB homepage or SiteB category (whatever is the best fit).

The way I would do it is, Domain/homepage to domain/homepage. Then create the same page with same/similar content on the recipient website for the 'authority' pages. So I'll redirect those authority pages to their replicas on the recipient site.

Everything else redirects to the homepage.

Whatever you do, don't make any page result in error 404.

For the best SEO value, use page-level 301 redirects from siteA to relevant pages on siteB, and only use a domain-level 301 when there's no relevant page to redirect to..
