I put out about 200 business cards 3 days ago and received zero hits. They were placed in a hotel lobby, library, a betting shop, on a lottery stand and in a phone booth!

I have 1800 more mind you. My site is priced at $7.99.

This is a good idea and the timing is just right from what I"ve experienced. Most of the small business owners are now considering the web more seriously and looking to learn the right information. As members of BHW we've seen just about every product and technique come down the pipe. Our ability to filter the garbage from the real stuff is invaluable to these guys.
I got my domain name for this and just setup up the membership part using Joomla and AEC. I have a bunch of content from some top quality resale rights products I purchased and hved lying around and this will serve as a good basis to build upon.
working on the content outline and progression now and hope to be live in a few days..
I think I"ll go with the pricing strategy recommended by Ryan Deiss and start testing at $17 per month.

I am just wondering how you guys are starting out. Are you teaching the basics lik build websites etc. Or are you introducing one area of IM like blogging or article marketing or cpa etc.. I am just wondering what direction you guys are taking you site in.

I'm going the route of positioning myself as an Internet Marketing Advisor. So following the sales funnel concept, my theme will be for small businessmen to learn to use the internet to get local leads via SEO, building a professional site with Joomla, using autoresponders, building an email list, developing an autoresponder sequence of messages, developing a loss leader or free report to collect email addresses, choosing a hosting package, choosing a domain name, using video on their site, selecting keywords, on page optimization, link building, writing adcopy, writing effective headlines, joint venturing with other local businesses, etc...
That should keep them busy for a few months of membership fees.... and let them see that marketing on the internet is al ot more than just throwing up a clunky site.
The whole time offering or rather being 'available' to jump in and take over any of these areas for them for a nice fee. The membership fees are just gravy I'm thinking. This is perfect to position myself at the $200 per hour range for services. That's the route I"m going to try...
Then as I compile more testimonials and such just keep raising my fee.
The end result being to develop lead generation sites for businesses and get paid per lead produced long term...

Anyone agree with this strategy? I've taken being a web design guy as far as it can go. This all seems doable from my experience...

What scripts are you guys using? I tried amember but it's really ugly on the graphical side.

I'm using AEC with Joomla for one site then going to use wordpress and memberwing for another...

This is a great twist on the original idea. I nvr thought about taking this to the small biz owner. I'd be interested in hearing your results. Your idea is great and sounds like it will be a winner.

I like it kenpodude. That is a great slant or niche. I think I am going to do some marketing on this and see if I can get some stuff going. I think going the business route you could charge a little more too for the membership fees and not have them bat an eye.

It's a superb idea. Kudos to OP for posting. Although noobs are the target population here but if you are looking for something advanced , I think Internet Business Mastery Academy sounds very attractive and of course doing very well for the creators. It's a membership site, $97 per month and has supposedly hundreds of members by now. It's has top notch quality information from what I have seen from the podcasts these guys put out on ITunes. I haven't seen the inside of the site ( I would love to). They are big on creating step by step process (think mind maps), creating camtasia videos and following the four hour work week concepts and life style design etc. Too bad it hasn't been brought over to BHW yet :) Maybe someone will on one of these days.

There's already a request for this at Download Requests section. Look for following link.

Hi Guys,

I've just finished reading through all the posts on this great idea, wish I'd seen it from the begining so I could have joined in the private meeting but not much point crying over spilt milk.

Anyway I thought I'd add an idea for distributing the business cards.

I do know from a long time in direct sales that sales is a numbers game so obiviously the more people who see your business cards increases the odds of people taking up membership, especially when your just starting up your business.

Apart from all the other ideas for placing cards in businesses etc there is nothing stopping you from standing outside a busy department store and giving cards to people as they walk out or walking through a mall handing out cards.

You could also place your cards on cars in car parks, on the drivers side window, between the window and the rubber is usually the best place, if you have your own kids they could earn a couple of quid extra pocket money helping you.

You could easily give out thousands of cards on a Saturaday afternoon using these methods rather than waiting weeks for people to pick up your cards at businesses.

Oliver, please don't spread misinformation. Just because you had a bad experience with business cards, it doesn't mean they automatically don't work. How was your design? Where did you place them?

Just to update those who care, I've started my own site mostly targeted at small business owners. For the content, I bought a membership to a PLR site with tons of great PLR info that I put up in the members area of my site, and some that I promote to my list.

This is a great business and I'm very thankful for the information in this thread.

The problem may be in more WHERE you placed them. Your market isn't going to be in the hotel lobby, library or betting shop. These are all passive places.

You may want to go back and re-read my original posting.

This is EXACTLY the strategy and mindset you need to take with this. Choose your market niche and know where you want to take them. Once you know what your ultimate plan is then it's easier to lead them.

Start educating people and don't worry about them "learning". What you'll discover is that few people will want to do anything themselves even if they "learned" how. They would prefer that you do all the work for them and pay you for it. I'm still getting offers for my site which I sold about a month ago with 800 paid members.

I'm now in the process of launching a holistic health membership site. But I'm going to do this a bit different. Instead of doing the promoting myself I'll find a couple of highly motivated people who will simply send out some letters to a specific group of business owners who will provide them with customer referrals. This is a much easier way to promote a business and gives those I work with residual income without worrying about creating a web site, internet marketing, content, etc...

Everyone who has a membership site should realize that the site is not the end goal or where the real money is. They need to understand, what you understand, that the real money is in creating these HYPER BUYERS and offering them services and products they're demanding.

What I did (and you could do something else) is start out with introducing the members to affiliate marketing. It was something they could easily understand and relate to. That covered my first 14 days. Showing them the possibility and profit potential of IM.

Then once they saw what was possible they were motivated to learn more about IM such as how to get a domain name, hosting, create a website, etc...

I did this is small snippets. Once they learned something such as how to get a hosting account and domain name I'd introduce them to clickbank. Then back to creating a website then to clickbooth then back to article marketing, etc...

This kept them properly motivated to want to learn more. More importantly they discovered that although they now understood how to get a hosting service they would prefer that I provided hosting service for them.

You can see the same process in this thread. How many people have asked about buying an entire website or content? They would prefer someone else to provide all of this then doing it themselves. That's where the money is for this not in membership. But in educating them and then doing for them. Eventually ending up with your own consulting business with you as THE one and only EXPERT they trust and buy from.

Hope this helps...
