I wish to purchase a new domain for a niche, the domain I want is taken in the .com but available in .org.

1st. Will the .org be less effective in terms of ranking? From what I read it seems no but what are other BHW members thoughts?

2nd. It will be a blog style site run by one individual, mainly adsense/affiliate marketing. Do you think the .org is a bad idea? It is definitely not an organisation nor do I want people to think that. I want it to come across as a 1 man job.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The reason some people say .com ranks best is because there are more .com domains registered in total and that's why you see more .com than .org in google search results.

.org ranks as well as all other tlds.
However, for users it's not as easy to remember as .com.

thanks for your response. So SEO aside, do you think it's more important to have a longer .com than a shorter .org?

I suppose this is very open to debate!

I personally love short domains, so I would probably go for the shorter .org. However you can't generalize this. Totally depends on the purpose of the domain / website.
