While I am waiting for my dumb rankings to skyrocket, I thought I take an offline marketing venture for one of my graphic design websites.

I sent out only 100 postcards using Vista Print to 100 1-4 month old businesses. Hopefully, they don't have a website yet and this reaches to them.

I got a man at DP to have a $100 investment into this. Hopefully, this could pull out 2-3 clients. (shooting for $2,500)

Is 100 postcards enough to get clients? I mean, it doesn't seem like that many...

    Agreed.

You never know what conversion rate you may get.

Maybe everyone will be interested and you will end up with 100 clients :D

Just make them look good and make sure they sell themselves ;)

How did you find out who to mail to? Who the new businesses were?

Try 100 then see from there not a bad test

Yeah all it takes is one lead and that can pay off all your expenses.
What's even better is getting 2 or 3 solid paying leads :)

    Best of luck!

Even a 2-3% response rate on direct mail would be above average (well above average in some sectors).

But response rate (leads) isn't closed business.

If you were a monster salesperson with a phenomenal value proposition, you may need to generate 5 or 10 leads to generate one closed deal.

5-10% response rate would be massive for direct mail.

You need to send much more to get a good indication if your postcard has right message, is the right size, color, etc., not to mention if your list is properly targeted.

Good luck dude, but from my experience 100 postcards isn't enough.

With direct mail advertising its all about your mailing list.
If they haven't opted in to receive your letters then your conversion rate is likely to be much lower.

Also, its always good to split test. For example, try sending 100 to start up companies, 100 to companies over 1 year old, 100 to established companies etc. Change the wording/color/message/call to action in each batch of postcards.

Keep experimenting until you find what works

We'll see what happens. I got a good feeling behind it though.

If it all fails, oh well. It's not my money.

A 2-3% conversion rate maybe above average but not a response rate

    Update.

No conversions. No leads. No sales. Lost money.

This is where offline marketing ends for me. :O

Spend $100 on advertising and you're out? You've only experienced one of the many ways to get clients my friend. Try networking with people that may have clients that need graphic design. Hit up your local print shops and offer them a referral system where they hand out your biz cards. Or even ask if you can post up fliers in their shop. Head over to Starbucks and leave your biz cards on every table.

There's so much more than direct mailing offline. To be honest, you can get clients without even paying anything. Cold calling or just walking into businesses worked fine forever and they still do.
