10 Step Guide to Hiring Link Builders That DON'T Suck!!

The OP wrote a great post, but I agree with skyrocketSEO that I wouldn't qualify based on the ten criteria. Different personalities do freelance work, and most clients I have worked with are actually fine with the hands-off, low contact approach to working assignments. I find showing them previous work, then explaining my process and schedule upfront takes care of most of the communication and qualifying problems, and maintaining email contact displays my command of English, sales, and current SEO skills.

So for every T0mmy who has legit reasons for the intense requirements, I run across 9 or 10 who are just overbearing, control freak time wasters. I say vive la difference and let the "we've got to skype every day" buyers work with similar sellers, while the more easy going buyers keep working with the easy going freelancers.

thanks Tommy. posts like these really help people like me who just throw money at it and in general end up unhappy

Thanks for another great post. After hiring, one thing that's helped me a ton is making videos and SOPs. My training process involves copy/pasting an email full of links. Anytime someone asks a good question I add it to a FAQ section.

On another note, if you are indeed taking requests - can you post the email template for how to take a dump on someone and then ask them for a favor? That could come in handy.

i do have request for you for the next post/topic if you would consider

Excellent share Tommy! How much do you recommend paying the link builder on an hourly basis?

A flat rate to begin with hourly and then a commission for each "successful" link placement they acquire.

I know Joe the cheek of it man lol.. Under normal circumstances in real life it would have been a swift.. Fuccccck off! Haha

Now i fear t0mmy may be the next fbi agent in BHW :D

I think you missed one point and I personally find it very important in people... consistency.
When I hire somebody then I want them to keep it consistent, unfortunately, most of the people try to impress you at first with their work but then the quality slides.

Awesome. I think this also applies to hiring any marketing related jobs aside from SEO, mainly PPC and SMM, and not only to turn a profit but to make a healthy relationship as well. By any chance, are you hiring? :D

Spot on man.. people don't think like that though - they want cheap and cheerful then expect the world. Agreed Skype is a major time waster I don't use it myself apart from a select few people on my team I actually work with.. always email between me and any clients.. hence why we train other people to do the grunt work on Skype.

have to add one point to your list... if people ask you to discuss stuff on skype then one should stay away from them. Skype is the major time waster, I hire people to work, not to chat on skype.
I barely ever reply when somebody asks me for skype to "discuss" things.

Good stuff, totally agree with your points. However, I believe the use of skype is not entirely wastage of time, as it would depend upon how you intend to use it.

Yeah big time! Consistency is a big one.. A lot of new staff will be firing on all cylinders when they first join up - the thing to watch for is does this momentum continue.. is it consistent as the months go on. Good point man.

Haha not at the minute man.. I'm luck to have a solid team surrounding me highly skilled in their own areas.. This gos back to a point earlier - surround yourself with people on the same journey as you.

About Skype - for clients I avoid it.. For staff well tbh it's essential guys - email updates come in every few days from staff but more times than enough it's quicker to get them on Skype to go through any issues on reports they've sent.. especially if it's important, because emails in this sense can take longer when an issue needs resolved quickly Skype can come in handy.

But yes in terms of clients I avoid it.. Because most will torture you all day long for reasons which are not going to help their campaign at all - mostly it is silly worries the likes of "when will i rank" and such.. so it's best to keep it to email or a ticket support system. In the rare cases when we do run support channels via Skype they are handled by a staff member that has been well trained.

From the perspective of a client looking for seo services, it would be good to use skype for communication. But for a service provider, it would obviously be a better option to respond to them via tickets after qualifying them.

Well ticket systems or even email are much better for the buyer and seller than Skype is imho. It prevents a lot of unneeded "chit chat" especially from potential clients that will ask a million questions then never sign up, imagine how much time is wasted with "how much money will my site make" "can i rank for viagra" "can we pay when we get the results!?" - these are the type of quacks you will get on Skype.

People with genuine interest and looking to properly suss out a service won't mind emailing.. they tend not to be the time wasters.

A ticket system is also a lot more organized as you can see all the history, you can close the issues when they are dealt with but always have that history there within reach should another issue arise. It's great for the buyer and it's great for the seller.. most of them too can be accessed by email if they wish.

If an ACTUAL client has went through the ticket system but still wants a one on one brief chat on Skype over concerns then of course it's only right you do so. But besides that - time is money.. and Skype can be wasted time for sure.
