My plan is simple. In the next 10 days I will earn £1000 through making static websites for local businesses.

Today I made a pretty basic template that can be customised to meet the needs of each client. It’s very simple but very versatile. I have a background in Graphic Design so I will customise the same template to reduce the time commitment for each client.

I will send 50 emails a day. My strategy to entice some conversions is simple. I will include a screenshot of my template edited to include their businesses colours, with their logo and branding.

I will also make 5 contest submissions a day to crowdsourcing sites with design competitions like Freelancer, DesignCrowd etc. to supplement my income and for practice.

I will be charging £150 as a flat fee; this will include hosting and a domain. I haven’t decided if I’m going to upsell additional services yet, I think this will depend on the individual client.

In my downtime I need to adjust the template to fit a CMS (probably wordpress, I want to see if I can find something more lightweight). Development isn’t really my thing so it will probably take me a few days.

Long term I want to make a modern, top notch landing page template and try and find marketers who can offer regular work. If I had 5 clients who needed a weekly landing page or 2 that would be ideal.

    Heres the template:

And here are some samples of my other work just so you can see my style

Any advice would be very much appreciated

I made the template. (its in the OP)

I'm targetting local small businesses. Finding emails took longer than I anticipated.

I did 25 proposals yesterday, 100 a day was probably a bit ambitious, they took a lot longer than I expected.

I didn't get a chance to do any freelance contests yesterday so thats my first task for today, then I'll get to sending proposals.

Yeah like Oxonbeef said, this type of thing can be a HARD sell.

You will probably have one marketing approach - direct marketing, thats emailing or cold calling

Within that you'll have 2 options:

    1. highly tailored thoughtful, but low quantity
    2. general mass quantity borderline spamming

It's going to be a hard sell trust me.

As a web designer in the UK (since 2006)

You are wasting your time with email. Get some cards printed, put on a nice set of casual clothes and go to town!

Go shop to shop introducing yourself, explain you are a new web designer in the area and you would love to sit down with them and discuss what you can do for them some time. Leave a card, it will leave much more of an impression than putting an unread email in a spam box.

Also, £150 a website is a joke. Way to low, it will cause more alarms than good.

Add a 0 on the end. £150 does not cover a months milk and tea for a reasonable company, they spend more on paper clips, bin bags, drawing pins..... People want premium, not cheap.
