I bought a domain from them just over a year ago which I now no longer need, so obviously I canceled renewal on PayPal but apparently, that won't do. I got an email earlier pretty much threatening me that if I didn't pay them my information will be forwarded to debt collection agency. How fucking shitty is this company?

Just because you cancel the payment method does not mean you have cancelled the service.

Speak to their support, explain you won't be renewing the domain.
 
That sucks dude. How much do you owe them? If its small amount maybe just pay to avoid the hassle.
 
If you're not is US, REQUEST them to forward your information to debt collection agency. And keep requesting them once a week.

PS: No one can force you to renew a domain. Did they renew it for you from their own pockets? If yes, its their fault.
 
I had the same problem with them. I had package that I didn't need anymore. I canceled contract on their panel on time, but they apparently you need to do it two times on their site. I just removed renewal on paypal, and was left with negative balance on their site. I tried to send them email, but nothing good happened. I just changed my personal info on their 1and1, and I never heard from them again.
They cant collect anything from me even if they tried.
 
It was most likely mentioned in their terms & co unfortunately, with some companies you can't just cancel a payment, you'll have to go through the company first.

They are shady. Lets say their contract no xxxxx is clearly described as domain+1y hosting. And if you don't turn off renewal in both corners of their site, they attempt to charge you anyway. Thinking that canceling contract ID once is enough fooled me.
 
Just talked to their support, was connected to a nice guy who had it canceled without any hassle. But which domain registrar puts that shady shit in their T&C?

I haven't had such an issue with any other domain registrar and I've bought from quite a lot of them

was around $36~ with them defaulting to every single unnecessary shitty add-ons of theirs

The ones that think they can get away with it most of the time and the times they can't the revenue is higher than their support costs.

It's a line item profit center for them... has been since AltaVista was the go to search engine.
 
A few years ago I had domain and a hosting. I obviously canceled payments, yet they kept charging and invoices accumulated in over £1K in debt. They actually forwarded my info to debt collectors. I ended up paying £400~ or something, I can't remember. I hope that this thread ranks #1 for keywords like:

Good job, 1&1 apparently put that in their T&C, it's sneaky, money hungry pigeons!
 
Not to mention how fucked up their control panel works. Plus every time you click a link a new window opens. Dumbest shit I ever saw. Talk about ass backwards.

Saw something similar where some guy was $1k debt for bandwith overcharge for ONE month
 
I have just had this recently, letter through the mail etc. do I just need to contact support and get it cancelled? The worst thing is there isn't even an available option on their website to resolve the payment, you have to phone them and they charge you over the phone, absolute joke of a company imo.

Call them, that's how I got out of that shithole
 
I had my account with 1&1closed by them because I did not renew a domain I had, that I didn't need anymore. I didn't know they took such things seriously. I had to call CC when I could not access my other domains anymore as I could not login and I was told my account had been closed and the only way to open it is, if I renewed my expired domain. I said No, so the CC gave me auth code to transfer my other domains to another registrar:(
 
Currently have debt collectors bothering me over domains + hosting I cancelled well over a year before it was supposed to renew. They're not getting a penny from me as I have all records of cancellation. They're such a joke of a company.
 
I have nothing smart to say other than I agree with you. They really do suck. It's a shame to be that big and suck that much.
