I just registered 3 new domains there for the sake of private whois and low prices. (I have 2 others I got for free so I didn't care).
BOY. So slow, so messy, not an option to bulk register.

Assuming you don't deal with your domains too much I think it may work.. But for managing more than 2-3 domains - BAD BAD BAD.
They did answer the phone within 1 minute though. And of course it was an Indy call center..

I recommend to choose another. I had only good experiences with Name.com... Too bad they got greedy.

I have about 8 different hosting accounts ranging from a Rackspace Cloud account and SliceHost to Hostgator.

I recently decided to give 1&1 a shot.

They are the absolute worst of the shared hosting bunch. Absolutely awful.

I also registered some domains as part of a hosting package with them. You can't even edit the DNS settings on domains you register with them as part of a package.

Their control panel UI is complete garbage.

I would avoid them.
 
I had the same experience as you guys. I have 1 account there with 1 domain. It's the worst company I ever worked with.
 
It was a mistake I learned from.. Because I registered 3 long-term domains I will be worrking on.
The control panel is something like 1999. Seriously. I vote for Name.com.. I admire their work, really.
 
At 1and1, their process takes more than a day to get the domain finally in your account - it is not instant as in name.com or godady.com - also their control panel interface is not intuitive. I had to get help from the support people to finally edit the nameservers
 
i second that
1&1.com 1and1.com sucks really hard.

namecheap is other dimension, they are good
 
As an IT Director, I can tell you that 1&1 was nothing but problem after problem. The previous IT Manager selected them for unknown reasons. The DNS manager is a nightmare (if you want to even call it a DNS manager). I have had to move all my DNS elsewhere and hosting is soon to follow... I do not recommend...

I use them to buy domains because they are cheap and they have free whois protection. It is a pain to cancel domains later but if you are just directing the domain to different hosting and plan to keep them they are fine.

I thought I will have easier life after 12H from registration but apparently not.
Can't change nameservers or whois records (which were automatically public).
2 domains were not yet registered + Every 6 clicks I get an error message in their control panel.

So those who consider 1+1 - Avoid it at all costs.
 
24H after registration - Got to my domains a few times during the day, and now the DNS is AGAIN not resolving to the right direction (getting to their landing page).

I hope it's local :0

I guess I will have to go against the crowd. As I have mentioned to many of you, 1&1 is not a solution for Interspire but if you are looking for a great Windows VPS package, 1&1 is great.

Some accounts have been banned in the past but I have been very happy with the hardware and setup.

For $40/month, it's a great tool to have in the kit.
 
everything that's said in this thread is true, however i have 1&1 hosting and make it work... (saving good money too (4.99 unlimited hosting right now (+ private reg))
(plus they accept paypal if you don't have credit card(str8 from my bank account)

only thing that sucks for me is the 24 hrs domain reg but i can live with it
 
1&1 is still around? Had a nightmare experience with them five years ago -- sounds like not much has changed. I will *never* use them as a host again. I used to use Fatcow, but their shared hosting is horribly slow lately. I use GoDaddy for the domains, and HostGator for everything else. When using HostGator, I've never looked back -- they do everything the right way and both their phone and chat support is great. It feels great never having to worry about my website being down.

I notice that HG does do an affiliate reseller program -- maybe when I get some more time as a side project I can sell HG accounts to people.
 
You guys that hate 1and1 just don't know how to use 1and1.

If you get their higher levels of hosting it is fantastic. Uptime is amazing, everything is backed up daily by them and with revision history, whilst there front line support is terrible, if you ask the right things you get through to very smart people on level 2, and their security systems are on point.

*always repping 1and1.

Most important tip anyone can give you, the most important tip of them all - Get your domains out of 1and1 ASAP!!
Also very important, they always made the registrar change a long and painful process. So don't wait for the last 30 days to change your domains to the gaining registrar. Last time I've done that, I had to file a complaint with ICANN and the BBB so the process would go smoother.

As I said before about 1and1, in life there's a simple rule - You get what you pay for! ;)
This beeing said, you can't beat their price!
