Yet, when I use them, I have latency between 3000ms and 6000ms. Either your proxies are oversubscribed or broken.

there's a few other tricks that can be used to hide your link, but in your case, why even go there?
And footer links aren't the best either.. get your link on a sidebar or something on a page with high PR on his site. Don't use "sitewide" links.
