If you are a musician making and promoting your own music videos anyway, is this a good way to use ads to make money off of your own videos? I know that it's mostly depending on how popular you can make your videos and promotion, but will one hand wash the other?

I am a musician and have for years used torrent sites to promote my music. It's tough for me to tell if it's made much of a difference in my popularity giving away my music for free through torrents. Do you think there is a certain medium/site aside from the piratebay that I should be looking at?
