I want to enter a niche where the first page is full of news sites. They are mostly recent news with no backlinks but the sites are old and established. How hard it will be to rank in this niche and how long do you think can take for a new domain?

I used to rank almost any kind of web site for 1 to 6 months using web2.0 (duplicate or spun content) and fiverr gigs. From the beginning of October all my sites got hit by manual reviews or Penguin 2.1 and I can?t get a site to the first page anymore. If anyone have a strategy that still work...
