I just stumbled on this news story, though it's from late last year.

According to Google, their Ad sales has been heavily affected by AI overview

Here's the full story: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cm9qzdqpxy48o

This is surprising to me because AI overview is meant to keep more users on Google instead of sending them to websites. The goal was to earn more money from users staying on the search page, but unfortunately, advertisers aren't taking advantage of that.

I hope it continues to affect their business so they return things back to normal.

what do you think?

Probably put ads on AI overview

That’s obvious. Google’s AI Overviews have driven many advertisers away because they’ve reduced clicks to websites. My ad revenue has also been hit hard.

Already happened, by the way
Wow, faster than we anticipate. Literally making money off other people's hard work, while not keeping your own end of the bargain.

Google is like a big evil bully.

Don't rely on Google too much for traffic and other services.

Of course, they will. No way they're doing it for free, for the good of the world.

If not Google, where will we get traffic? :(
I'd aim for direct recurring traffic. Building a brand, so people will come back to your website / asset in different ways.

It really depends on where does your audience hang out. Then target the audience and bring them to your website, offer quality content - make them stay & come back.

Maybe the following sounds strange, but branding your website in visitors memory is powerful.

Interesting Google needs to find a balance between AI Overviews, advertisers, and website owners. Otherwise, the current approach could hurt the entire search ecosystem

It's there for months, I'm surprised so few people noticed.
Never seen them before. Or just didn't notice, would keep an eye to see them.

Google now keeps both the clicks and the ad revenue

This AI Overview shit it's madness....it's 100% against G business model "money for clicks"....if the user gets his answer from the AI Overview why the fuck should he click on an ad?....I have herd some rumours that G is preparing some auction type url display in the ai overview.

Who pays more gets the recommendation from the AI answer so the user can click it and make the purchase. This will mean one thing: the small guy will starve and the big companies will take every bit of business and profit.
