Are AEO and GEO worth looking into in 2026?

I keep seeing people boost their traffic by actually focusing on AEO/GEO, but the thing is, back in my time, we only ever really relied on traditional SEO. For context, i run a midsize equipment rental website and we have a team of about fifteen people.

The reason why I'm asking is because an intern told me that we should probably try our best to get indexed by ChatGPT and CloudAI and other AI chatbots and that breaking into these two would be our best bet.

I have a good idea about AEO after consulting with my content head (Perplexity, Promptwatch, etc) But i don't really want to spend beyond what's needed. Pretty cluelessa bout GEO myself too, any help would be great!
have been doing some experimenting with ai visibility tool recently nd it looks like citations help more than mention for tracking, also I am curious if anyone else is getting any leads via chatgpt or perplexity, what tool do you use for tracking ai traffic?

For an equipment rental business, I'd start with a small pilot tied to enquiries, rather than buy a large 'AI visibility' package. Choose a few real customer questions, such as delivery coverage, access requirements, deposits and which machine suits a particular job. Make the answers accurate and easy to find on the relevant service pages.

Record AI referrals and completed enquiry forms before and after the changes, and ask new customers how they found you. Keep citations as a separate visibility measure: being mentioned in an answer doesn't automatically mean a qualified rental lead. Expand the work if the business results justify it.

Yes, worth testing. Make your content useful and answer real customer questions. That's where I'd start.

Depends. AEO is extremely relevant if you are a product business especially regarding which several topical questions and problems can arise. While SEO is global

I agree with praetserge that the wording matters here. AI chatbots do not index pages in the usual sense, so the work is still regular SEO made clear and easy to quote, as Rise Studios put it.

For this kind of rental business, OKKO made the most useful point for me. Exact service radius, equipment availability by ZIP, and local damage policies are the details an AI answer would need to pull. That also fits what Kyline said about keeping the Google Business Profile and local citations strong.

I would follow nguyenvannhung and run a small pilot tied to enquiries, recording AI referrals and completed enquiry forms before and after. Elodia raised the right tracking question too. Citations that link back to the page are easier to judge than mentions alone, and enquiries will show whether the pilot is worth expanding.

Good SEO is a Good GEO, AEO, LLM SEO or whatever you want to call it.

Just focus on traditional SEO. That's what you need to get cited by AI.

Focusing on AEO/GEO makes sense imo but it's not as content-related as one might think. It's a lot more about directories and comparison sites

Start with good service pages helpful content and accurate business information try out AEO and GEO but make sure you track how they are performing so you don’t spend too much money on them
