When a site drops in a core update and the link profile looks fine (no spammy anchors, no sudden velocity, nothing toxic worth disavowing), the usual advice is improve the content and wait. That is too vague to act on.

Curious what you actually check when links are not the problem. Is it one section that lost traffic or the whole site, and do the lost keywords share the same search intent. I would also like to know if anyone has seen pages come back without a major rewrite, or if recovery only came after the next update.

What got movement for you, and what turned out to be wasted effort.

A clean backlink profile doesn't guarantee protection from core updates. I'd check GSC to see whether the drop is sitewide or limited to specific pages and search intents. Compare affected keywords with current top ranking competitors. Avoid mass rewrites or unnecessary disavows. Identify what's actually changed before making adjustments.

A clean backlink profile is only one part of SEO, so I wouldn’t assume links are the issue. I’d compare the pages and queries that lost rankings against the competitors who gained, then look for differences in intent, content depth, originality, and site-wide quality before making changes.

The best approach is to understand what the algo or the update is all about. If there is a core update you want to know what it's focusing on: Is it the content? Is it the backlink profile? Is it the AI content?

Every other update doesn't really target the backlink profile. Most updates also work with the nature of the article content structure. Are you working with media in your article? Are you focusing on the consumer rather than targeting the crowd? All these factors need to be checked before you decide if it's the backlink problem

A useful starting point is comparing the pages that lost traffic with competitors that gained it during the same update.

Forget links for now, focus on your content structure and interlinking if you are targeting a certain keyword, you need to continuously push content for that keyword and supplement your main article or page.

Its not like, posted a content, and you got it ranked and it will stay in the ranking forever. Requires continuous links and content reinforcement. Plus stay in your niche.

If the whole site get nuked, its requires more intense check.
