Got a page that sat in the top few results for months and then started drifting down week by week. No announced update, nothing in search console, no manual action.
Content is the same, links are the same, nothing technical changed as far as i can tell.

What do you check first when it happens like this? Do you go look at who replaced you in the SERP, or do you start pulling the page apart first?

Check the SERP first, see what changed in the pages replacing you, especially content, intent, freshness, and overall authority.

If the competitors look stronger, then go back and review the page rather than changing things blindly.

I’d check the SERP first and see what changed among the pages replacing it. Comparing intent, content depth, freshness, and links can usually reveal more than immediately tearing your own page apart.

You need to check the search results for that keyword to see which competitors have replaced you, whether they've updated anything new, and the reasons why they might have replaced you. Then, adjust your campaign and content if necessary to regain that position.

i could watch the losing queries separately because sometimes when some particular types of searches arent converting anymore it was not always a site-wide problem.

See if the new top pages are fresher, more in-depth, or hitting a slightly different intent. If they look similar, then I’d audit the page and test a small refresh before tearing it apart.

Worth checking one thing nobody mentioned yet. did an AI Overview, featured snippet, or some other SERP feature show up above your result recently?
Your ranking position can stay the same but if Google starts putting more stuff above your listing, you can still lose clicks. If that keeps happening for a few weeks, it can look like a slow ranking or traffic slide.
I would check what the SERP looks like now compared to a few months ago before assuming the page or competitors are the problem.

It is important to determine who has taken over your spot first of all. In most cases, it happens bcz the new results have optimised their content or improved user experience.

first thing id check is whether impressions dropped or just clicks, completely different problems. if impressions are steady you probably got pushed down by a serp feature like an ai overview not a competitor. check for lost backlinks too, even a few good ones dropping can cause a slow slide like this. also look at internal links, new pages on your own site can accidentally dilute the old page. and rule out seasonality before panicking, some queries just dip at certain times.

first i will check the serp and see who is ranking above my site then update my page if they have fresh or better content and build links if needed
