Am I doing SEO wrong?

I keep buying backlinks trying to raise my authority, I spent a couple thousand -> DR went from 7 to 9
I go for DF links on as high DR sites that I can find, but the thing is; it costs a lot per site + I need the article written + it barely moves the needle
I tried going for a seller who offers lots of links at once, but from my research it's risky to use such high amounts of low quality links and PBNs can even get you deindexed.

Is the reality of SEO genuinely sitting every day finding websites willing to take your money? I can't do this anymore I swear..
Every day I find a website, pay 100-250, then another website.
I must be doing something wrong, there must be a better way.
Please guys let me know what is the actual approach to be used, I am in a gray market so it's not just hitting up someone saying hello wanna trade links.

You can check the pages you’re trying to rank and make sure the content and search intent are properly optimized. Also, focusing only on adding high DR links won’t help much. It depends on the quality and relevance of the sites, content optimization, anchor placement, and the overall link profile.

If the niche is competitive, you may need more quality links and more time to see good movement.

Project is two years old, the heavy buying is pretty recent so the low DR doesn't bother me too much. What's bothering me is the exhausting routine of preparing articles and paying 100-200 to have them posted. It just feels wrong, like there is a more effective way that I don't know of.
 
i think the first thing i'd stop watching is DR. you can spend thousands and barely move it while the pages you actually care about still improve.

i'd pick the main keywords, look at the pages ranking top 5 and compare their referring domains at page level. then spend around those gaps instead of buying another random high DR placement every day.

much easier to tell what is actually moving the needle that way.
 
Stop optimizing link buys for DR/authority; do it page-by-page.

Pick target pages/queries, compare competitor top pages for referring-domain gaps, set placement criteria for relevance/intent, then use Search Console (clicks/impressions/query/page rank movement) to decide whether to add more or pause.

Yes actually I would be less concerned about the DR nd just examine the page which you want to rank. Just find where your top competitors have more links, add some relevant links where there is a need for link nd then observe the results on GSC.

Yes, DR may serve as a good filter, but it should not be the main driving force of the entire stratey. Link gap analysis, comparison of ranking pages, and then verification with Google Search Console are typically more effective.
 
All of it must start with the user journal path analysis. And then top competition linkanalysis. @passivebread, I think you need to focus on a mixture of local relevant news sites, quality parasite real estate, and topical authority building niche authority links.

If you follow the recommendation above you should gain in moving the needle.
