What actually matters when ranking a Google Business Profile for multiple local keywords?

I'm working on a local SEO project where the goal is to rank the Google Business Profile for several service-related keywords, not just the main category.

I'm trying to understand how others approach this. How much weight do you normally put on the primary/secondary categories, services, reviews, location relevance the website, local links and citations?

Also, when a GBP is already optimized but still isn't ranking for related keywords, what do you normally investigate first?

Google says local ranking are primarily based on relevance, distance and prominence, with complete business information, reviews and web signals contributing to how Google understands the business.

This should work well as a discussion because it asks about the actual ranking process and troubleshooting, rather than simply asking for a list of GMB tips.

if the GBP is already well optimized i'd check the website and local relevance next sometimes the profile is fine but the supporting signals aren't strong enough.

optimizing your GBP doesn't mean you will rank for every keyword but enough reviews and search activity can help, you should also look at proximity and the strength of local signals before making major changes, since not every keyword can be targeted effectively through GBP optimization alone.

First thing I check is whether those services are actually written down anywhere. Services list, description, the site. Half the time theyre not, the description was written before they started offering half of them and nobody touched it since.

I thinks category and proximity play important roles if the signals for a website were not strong, then the map will not move for secondary keywords.

i usually compare the businesses ranking for each keyword their categories, landing pages, reviews and local links can show what signal your profile might be missing.

citations are useful for consistency but i wouldn't build hundreds just for the sake of it a few relevant local land industry mentions can be more useful than a pile of generic directories.

How are you measuring your rankings? What grid size?

You can check the ranking for each keyword and then compare the top businesses in the area. After that check their categories, service pages, reviews and local links so you can identify what you’re missing.

Google says local ranking are primarily based on relevance, distance and prominence,
Its true. It matters alot in local businesses. But target the primary keyword on the homepage that's necessary and create sub-services for that keyword and create neighborhood pages as well.

And reviews are now most important factor in local SEO right now. Get your business listed on Yelp, BBB, angie and few others big authority sites and get reviews there as well.

I usually check categories and service relevance first then look at reviews and local website signals if rankings stay low

Categories and keywords within the real service website do most of the heavy lifting, IMO. If everything were still dead after all that seriously examine ur local backlinks and proximity filters, TBH.

reviews that name the service are what moved secondary keywords for me. profile was complete, services listed, still stuck for ""boiler repair" until 5 or 6 reviews said boiler repair in the text. plus a page on the site for that service with the same wording, then it moved in a month. check with a grid tracker, not your own phone
