Are Expired Domains Worth Investing In Today?

Google has a named spam policy for this now, expired domain abuse, added March 2024. The definition isn't about a spammy backlink profile at all. It's buying a domain and repurposing it primarily to trade on its old reputation with content that gives people little value. Their own examples are affiliate content on a former government site and casino pages on a former school.

Expiring domains function only in cases where there is a very strong topical continuity. It is no longer possible to buy any random DR50 domain and get inherited authority for ranking any type of content. Google's expired domain abuse policies and spam systems have greatly improved in identifying inconsistencies between the domain's history and present usage.

Is real estate worth investing in today? People say domaining is dead but the market is up this year and I still see domains selling for upwards of XX Ks every week.

If the name is highly desirable it will always be worth something (unless it is based on a limited time fad)

I'd definitely prefer an expired domain over a brand new one.

But I only buy when I find something good at a reasonable price. If I see a promising domain, I'll place a bid at auction. Below $10~30,
If the price goes too high and I lose, I just move on.

at that price most of what you catch has basically no real link profile left. a cheap expired is only worth it if it still has a few unique links with solid topical anchors and the content never switched niches in its history. if it doesn't have that, $10 is still too much

That's why I always check the Wayback Machine and backlink profile before buying.

you can still find aged domains with decent backlinks for just a few bucks, especially in less popular niches .

Almost placed a $25 auction bid yesterday. RoyRoyan's point that cheap catches have basically no real link profile left stopped me cold. Now I'm checking history before anything.

good instinct. i usually scroll through the whole wayback history, not just the last snapshot before the drop, and check whether it was ever farmed or used for doorways. then i compare the anchors with what the site supposedly was. if the history is clean and the links are still live, then i start thinking about a bid

I've been seeing mixed opinions about expired domains lately. Some people still get great SEO results from them, while others believe Google now ignores much of their old authority after ownership changes.

If an expired domain has a clean backlink profile and relevant history, do you think it's still worth investing in? Or is building a brand-new domain the better long-term approach?

I'd love to hear your recent experiences.
I’d consider an expired domain if it has a clean history, relevant backlinks, and a strong topical fit. But I wouldn’t buy one just for its old authority. If those factors aren’t there, I’d rather build a fresh domain and grow it naturally over time.

If Expired Domains are worth it if history and backlinks are good and clean for the content of the new site Personally I would review the old content and backlinks before investing It may take longer to build but a fresh domain can be worth it than an expired one with bad history
