Hey guys,
I've been focusing mainly on on-page SEO(content quality, keywords optimization, internal linking, etc.) for a new blog.
Do you think that's enough to start ranking, or are backlinks still necessary from the beginning?
Has anyone here ranked a new site using mostly on-page SEO only?
Curious to hear your experiences.

Questions like this leave out the most important part, niche competition.

I have ranked #1 on Google without a single link but that is usually for personal names or
other branding stuff where a handful of people have the same name.

Start ranking?

Yes.

Even in what you would consider medium comp keywords on-page has seen a trickle of
traffic being on the 2nd/3rd page for keywords and front page for long tails.

Sooner or later though you will need off site SEO.

It is enough to start ranking.

It can even be more than that if done very very well.

While excellent on-page SEO and topical authority can get you ranking for low-competition long-tail keywords in 2026, you'll still eventually need high-quality backlinks or "Digital PR" to build the domain trust required to compete for more profitable, high-volume search terms.

I am still new to this, but from what I have learned, on-page SEO helps a lot in the beginning. Still, it seems like backlinks are important too. Some people rank without them, but combining both probably works better for steady growth.

i have witnessed instances where new websites manage to rank without even doing any link-building at all especially when the sites target topics that have low competition. however, it will be hard work if ur sites are competting with already established websites. my advice would be to first improve the quality of content before anything else.

That is impossible. You cannot rank without backlinks.

On-Page IMO may be enough for the long-tail keyword that has less competition, but eventually, the backlinking will come into play once you begin ranking more difficult keywords. maybe you should concentrate on your content first before worrying about creating backlink.

On-page can get you started, but for a new site I’d slowly build some good relevant backlinks too.

good for low competition keywords early on, but once you go after anything remotely competitive you'll need backlinks too, on-page alone got me stuck around page 2 for the tougher terms

no zero percent chances in any competitive niche though. on page will get ur website indexed and ranked for key words which no longer exists you needs links or high authority to actyally move the needle.

On-page SEO can definitely get you some early rankings, especially for low-competition keywords. But once you target competitive terms, backlinks usually become important. I’d build the content foundation first, then slowly add relevant backlinks, no need to go crazy from day one

There have been times when I have seen fresh websites generate traffic through on page SEO only but these were mostly in niches with less competition. Back links were not required on the first day, but will be required at some point in tym in order to target tough keywords.

the imo on the page will be sufficient for building traction for low competition keywords however, this tactic will not work in competitive niches. I will create content nd start generating backlinks once I have built traction.

you can absolutely start ranking with mostly on-page SEO especially for low comp kws. focus heavily on search intent.

On-page can get you started in the ranking tussle, but you need consistent quality backlinks to stay strong at the top.

thats enough start ranking in some cases. if you do it really well and cover the topic properly it can go even further
