Has anyone had pages rank surprisingly well without building backlinks?

I am seeing this happening more often now days to be honest, it seems like its about good page structure, internal linking and topical clusters

Same experience here - pages that closely match search intent and sit on a site with good internal linking can rank for low-competition terms with zero external backlinks. It's really once you hit competitive keywords that backlinks start making the real difference.

Did you just mean without any backlinks direct to the root domain? then NO. but if you consider a page/blog posts without backlinks, then YES its possible and a feasible thing since root domains passes link juices to other pages as well.

I'll typically look for questions getting hundreds or even thousands of monthly searches that also have relatively low competition. Sometimes a page that answers the search intent really well can rank surprisingly fast, even without an active link building campaign. In my view, strong on-page SEO, good internal linking, and content that genuinely solves the user's query can do a lot of the heavy lifting. Backlinks still matter, but they seem to become more important once the competition increases.

I once bought views for my video that became very popular on YouTube. It had a link to my site in the description. My site shortly thereafter ranked #1 for a popular keyword. It made me $30,000 over it's lifetime. Just some food for thought. If you have $50 to invest in some views. But this was 10 years ago, so, you know.

Yes i see it happen to rank for some low competitive keywords with no backlinks only good optimized content is fine

Yeah, this happens more than people expect, usually on low-competition, high-intent keywords where content quality and matching search intent well can outweigh the lack of a link profile entirely. I've also seen it on pages that get strong internal linking from already-authoritative pages on the same site, essentially borrowing authority internally instead of from external links.
The pattern I'd watch for though: it tends to happen on long-tail or niche-specific terms, not competitive head terms. The moment competition increases, backlinks start mattering a lot more, so I wouldn't read it as "links don't matter," more as "content + intent match can substitute for links up to a certain competition ceiling."

absolutely! pages that have few backlinks have ranked higher than other pages that look better bcz they have got the intent spot on. when a page gives u exactly what u need talks about the topic clearly nd has quallity internal links, google does not need hundreds of backlinks to know what it is worth.

Yes, and the trick is targeting keywords with low competition. You can pair that with higher search volume if you really want to drive more traffic, but generally the lower the competition, the easier it is to rank. You’ll still run into some larger sites from time to time, but I’ve published plenty of blog articles using this strategy with keywords I found through Ahrefs Keyword Explorer and had them rank without doing any link building at all.
