The $2k/month mistake I didn't see coming when launching a casino

Hi! From time to time, I'll be sharing my experience here as I build my own casino startup. I'd love to hear your feedback and comments so I know what else to write about.

Let's get started!

When I first considered implementing my iGaming project, I mostly focused on platform fees, licensing, and games coverage. Hosting was an afterthought – turned out to be an expensive one.

By the month 5, our infrastructure bill had grown to $2-$3k per month. This was not because of any huge traffic we were having, but rather because the bill included lots of minor costs:

- additional production capacity
- staging servers
- backups
- monitoring
- storage and bandwidth
- integration environments for third-party services
- temporary increase in capacity during promotions (can describe in comments)

Each of them individually seemed harmless, but they added up.

Later we swtched to online casino software, and most of these expenses were incorporated into platform setup. Our own hosting costs were reduced to $700-$1,000 per month.

Besides saving like $1500/month, this allowed us to know what will be the scaling costs before doing it.

If you are thinking of iGaming turnkey solution vs white label vs building your casino from scratch, then I would suggest asking this question from providers:

"Please show me my infrastructure costs with 10000, and 100000 active users."

Not the cost of launching. Monthly bill. (Ahaha)

This is where the difference between iGaming software providers lies.

Anyone had such experience after going live?

This is a good point. I think infrastructure costs are one of those things that are easy to underestimate because every individual service looks cheap until you combine everything.

I will also ask providers about scaling costs, peak traffic, third-party integrations, backups, and what happens during promotions not just the initial setup fee.

The 10k vs 100k active-user question is especially useful because it exposes how predictable the platform really is. In iGaming, knowing your cost structure before scaling can make a huge difference.

Absolutely. Infrastructure costs can easily get overlooked at the start, but they become a major expense as you scale. Asking for projected monthly costs at different user volumes is definitely a smart move.

Totally agree, that's such a great point. People always obsess over the big upfront costs like licensing and software but forget how fast staging, backups, and bandwidth quietly eat into the budget.

Switching to a provider that bundles all that infrastructure stuff together was a smart call. And asking for the projected monthly bill at 10,000 and 100,000 users is honestly such a solid tip for anyone out there comparing platforms right now. Thanks for sharing this, really useful. :)

Similar experience. Our costs for infrastructure prior to switching were these:

* production + staging - $1100/month
* backups/storage - $250
* monitoring/logging - $180
* bandwidth + additional capacity - $400-700
* extra scaling during campaign time - another $300-500

So we spent about $2200-$2700 month with nothing fancy going on with the traffic.

With our platform switched to NuxGame, our costs for additional infrastructure have dropped to about $800 - $1000 in month. But more than the savings per se, it was important to know the costs of scaling beforehand.

While using NuxGame we would request to be told about all limits and what is included in staging, backups, monitoring, and scaling. It could totally change the picture of iGaming platform cost.
