Are backlinks still the biggest ranking factor in 2026?

Backlinks have always been a major part of SEO, but Google has improved a lot in understanding content quality and relevance.
Do you still see backlinks as the strongest ranking factor, or have other signals become more important?

In my view, backlinks are still important, although the quality gap between now nd then is too great to ignore. a backlink from a reliable website has better value than multiple backlink. content is also playing a bigger role now.
 
In my opinion backlinks are still improtant but they are not only focusable thing, good content and s useful website also matters a lot.
 
Backlinks still matter, especially when they come from trusted and relevant websites, but they're no longer enough on their own. Today, high-quality content, strong topical authority and meeting user intent often have an even bigger impact on long-term rankings.
 
Backlinks still matter to me personally, but they won't support poor content as they did before. I have seen decent sites with great internal linking do very well with fewer backlinks.

Such elements as good content, search intent, topic authority, and proper technical optimization should not be ignored. It works best when backlinks help to boost an already good website.
 
Keyword/niche relevant backlinks still the best & strongest ranking factor, But content quality matters too.
 
In my opinion, a quality backlink is more valuable than many random links. Relevance matters more than just the number of backlinks.

That's a good point. How do you usually identify trustworthy websites for backlinks? Do you rely on organic traffic, relevance, or any specific metrics?
 
I still think quality backlinks are one of the strongest ranking factors but they work much better when the content and overall site quality are already solid

however, I think that backlink are still a valuable signal, but not the only one. what really matters is when there is a relevant backlink from a credible website together with gud content and user signal .
 
Honestly, I don't see backlinks as the single biggest factor anymore. They're definitely still a top three signal, but raw link volume just doesn't move the needle the way it used to.

These days, topical authority and user engagement seem to carry a lot more weight. If you build out tightly focused content and genuinely answer the user's question better than anyone else out there, you can outrank sites that have way stronger link profiles than you.

Links are still necessary as a baseline for trust, especially if you want your content getting cited in AI search tools, but strict relevance and quality matter way more than sheer numbers do today.

yes backlinks are one of the greatest metrics to get your site authority stronger if you built it in the quality niche with content and anchor text

I think “the biggest ranking factor” is the wrong way to frame it because the bottleneck changes with each SERP. For a low-competition informational query, search intent and internal linking may be enough. In a competitive commercial SERP where every page is already well optimized, relevant authority links often become the differentiator.

When evaluating a donor site, I would look beyond DR: topical relevance, indexing stability, traffic and keyword trends, editorial standards, outgoing-link footprint and whether the link could bring relevant visitors. A high-DR site publishing unrelated paid posts every day can be less valuable than a smaller niche site with a real audience.
 
I see backlinks like a boost, but user satisfaction is the real key in 2026 when people staying on your page and reading, search engine automatically trust your site more.
 
I do not think backlinks are the single biggest ranking factor anymore, but they are still one of the most important. Strong content without authority often struggles to rank in competitive niches, while backlinks alone cannot save poor content.
 
Backlinks are still one of the strongest ranking factors , but they are not enough by themselves anymore. Good content quality, matching the search intent, topical authority, and a clean technical foundation matter as well, and honestly they do. The best results tend to show up when you combine all of those aspects together, rather than depending only on links alone.
 
Backlinks still matter but they're no longer the whole game. In 2026 relevance search intent topical authority and genuine user engagement carry just as much weight

A handful of high quality contextually relevant backlinks will always outperform hundreds of low value ones seo today is about earning trust not just collecting links
 
I still build backlinks, but I care more about where they come from. A link from a related website feels much more valuable than a lot of unrelated ones.
