When do you merge overlapping blog posts instead of updating them separately?

I'm auditing a site with several articles targeting closely related keywords. Each page gets some impressions, but none ranks strongly, and internal links alone have not fixed the overlap.

My current approach is to compare intent, query overlap, backlinks, and conversions; keep the strongest URL; merge the unique sections; redirect weaker pages; and refresh internal links. The difficult part is deciding whether consolidation will improve topical clarity or erase useful long-tail coverage.

What signals do you use before merging posts? Have you seen a measurable lift after consolidation, and how long did it take?

If two pages are competing for the same searches merging them usually makes more sense.
 
I merge them when they're targeting the same intent. it usually helps reduce keyword cannibalization and strengthens one page.

i normally consider the overlap of the intents, traffic, backlinks nd uniqueness of each page. in case two pages have the same queries, consoliidating the pages would be the solution. this could take some weeks or months depending on the outcome but the main objective is to create one resource that is compprehensive.

of course I do look into keyword, but my analysis goes deeper as I check search intent, traffic potential, backlinks nd user intent for every page separately. In case of several page dedicated to the same problem, consolidation make sense.
 
I normally do merges where both pages have a huge number of overlaps in keywords, and Google is constantly switching between the URLs in its SERP. Where each page generates its own long-tail traffic with different intent, I would not even consider merging them.
Following a correct merge 301 redirect recrawl, I noticed rankings settling into place in about 4-8 weeks.
 
I usually merge pages only when they target the same search intent and compete for the same queries. In many cases, consolidation improves rankings and organic traffic within a couple of months, especially after updating the content and implementing proper redirects, though results depend on how quickly search engines recrawl the site.
 
I check if both pages are solving the same problem. If they have the same purpose, I usually merge them into one better page.

One indicator that I look out for is the actions of the users. If the visitors are bouncing around two similar articles using internal links, then there is a high probability that they should be combined to create one gud article.
The cases where the results were better following the merger was when the new page was able to answer the topic more compreh ensively.

first of all i consider the search intent. when several pages r answering the same query nd competing on the same keywords, then consollidation may be usefful. however i do not merge the pages which have unique long tail traffic nd provide value to the other user intents. once the pages are merged i monitor clicks, impressions nd rankiings.
