While many people are still confused if SEO is dead and people stopped using Google search, Google has a different story to tell. For context, Lionel Messi scored in a record sixth straight World Cup knockout match to help Argentina reach the quarterfinals with a stunning late comeback to beat Egypt 3-2 on Tuesday in Atlanta.

Nick Fox, Senior Vice President of Knowledge & Information at Google, said Google Search "broke all prior usage records and saw its highest usage in history" after Argentina scored its winning goal in yesterday’s World Cup match.

This shows the people's interest in Google search despite the availability of multiple AI tools and answer machines to replace search engines. It indicates that people are still trusting search engines as reliable source of News and information.

People still search a lot and Google still gets huge usage,It's just more competitive now with all the AI's these days. But it might be dead eventually.
 
I agree SEO is still alive, but this argument is a bit of a stretch.
People still use Google = Rankings have commercial value = Existing SEO methods can improve rankings?

We can't say it for sure. Web search might evolve into something else. All they need is creativity.

I Don't think SEO is going anywhere. AI has changed how people search, but Google is still the fastest place for live updates, news, and finding different sources.

Exactly! Google gives both AI + search experience while AI tools like chatgpt limit the response to a summary of curated content. Most people won't be happy with it. Search engines will survive for sure unless they stop catching up to the trends and evolving.

When people say SEO is dead, they never meant people have stopped using Google, I don't know how you manufactured that argurement from.

It's about traffic trickling from Google to sites, it has either completely been replaced with AI overview and similar AI bullshit from Google, or big sites have been given the preferential treatment to rank for all keywords, as a result taking everythign away from smaller sites.

Nobody suggested that Google is no longer being used. That's actually a silly point to make.

It is not the search proces which has become extinct rather, the strategie for getting trafic have become obsolete. the fact is that google continues to reign supreme when it comes to search but becuz of the evolution of AI and SERPs, it has become dificult to get click.

True. Reddit and AI Overviews are taking a major chunk of the traffic, particularly from informational content. However, this spike in traffic proves that many users still prefer search engines and the clients leaving traditional SEOs in favour of GEOs are wrong. People doing things like content chunking in favour of GEO will lose SEO traffic in the long run.

Interesting data point, but I'd push back a bit on using it as proof "SEO isn't dead." Search volume spikes around viral live events (World Cup goals, elections, breaking news) regardless of how healthy organic SEO is as a channel — people default to Google for fast, current info no matter what.

What I think is more telling is whether that traffic actually converts into clicks on organic results, or gets swallowed by AI Overviews before users scroll past the fold. Anyone here tracking their own CTR on trending/news-type queries lately? Curious if AI summaries are eating visibility even during high-traffic moments like this one.

That's a valid point. People do consider Google as a reliable tool for finding trending topics as it updates information faster than AI tools.
 
SEO might be shifting but the habit of searching is and always will be there and that kind of real time traffic spike proves the demand is still massive.
 
I search Google and DuckDuckGo almost daily. For some niches I use DuckDuckGo, and for the rest I use Google. All my traffic still comes from Google and other search engines. I'm not a big fan of SSM, and I know some people who get primary traffic from Facebook fan pages and Pinterest for the same niche, but for me it's always search engines. It's much easier to automate link building, optimize on-page content, and internal links than to maintain SSM for primary traffic. So SEO isn't dead - the new word for SEO is now AEO lol

It will never be dead. If google search is dead, they will find other reliable ways.
 
I use pornhub as my Search engine.

I also think that people are accustomed to using Google.

Obviously that is changing slightly.
