How Effective Is Negative SEO in 2026?

Google somewhere mentioned in an article that it now ignores spam or low quality backlinks projected at a website.

Neg SEO attacks have become increasingly difficult to execute, but this does not necessarily mean that they are not possible at all. Google certainly appears to be better at blocking much of the junk signals, but an odd pattern is surely capable of creating problems, particeularly in the case of vulnerable websites.
 
I have at least two sites that dropped out of Google search results following a massive spam attack by competitors (using anchor texts with prohibited themes). So yes, it still works. But it is fixable.
 
From what i've seen google is much better at ignoring random spam backlinks than it used to be i still monitor my backlink profile but i haven't seen them seriously affect a healthy site

I think its less effective
 
Negative SEO is far less effective than it used to be. Google’s systems are generally pretty good at brushing off low quality or spammy backlinks rather than directly punishing the site that’s getting targeted. Still, it pays to keep an eye on your backlink profile. Also, make sure your website is secured, and watch for red flags, like hacking, nasty redirects, or big scale link spam. Doing regular checks, along with solid security habits, usually ends up being the best defense.
 
Negative SEO is much less effective today because Google is better at ignoring most spammy backlinks instead of penalizing sites for them. I still keep an eye on my backlink profile, secure my site and fix technical issues quickly since those are the areas that can still cause real problems.
 
From my experience google is much better at ignoring random spam backlinks than it used to be i still monitor my backlink profile but i haven't seen low quality links alone seriously hurt a healthy website
 
i still monitor new backlinks in search console but i don't panic over every suspicious link building strong topical authority and earning quality backlinks has been the best defense for me
 
I think google is much better at ignoring spam links now. I do not worry every bad backlink, but I still check my backlink profile once in a while.
 
I Think Google is better at filtering low quality link's than it used to be, but I would not assume every site is immune. Regular monitoring has saved me from a few headaches.
 
Negative SEO is less effective nowadays, because Modern search engine (Google) is way smarter to filter out spammy links.

however if you found spammy links, you can use "Google Disavow tool" to get rid of those links.
 
i keep an eye on new backlinks through search console but i focus more on building authority than worrying about every suspicious link a strong natural backlink profile has been the best protection for me
 
I don't think it works in the same way as it did before. Google is much better in ignoring spammy backlinks now. I still check my backlink but I spend more time in improving my own site than worrying about negative SEO.
 
Don't spend much time worrying about random spam links anymore.
Sites with good security, clear site architecture, high-quality content, and regular monitoring are generally enough to overcome negative SEO(most spam links are often ignored by google)

If you have good website security and know how to disavow spammy backlinks then negative SEO doesn't affect you at all.
 
I'm not sure that negative SEO ever lived up to the hype. It was a lot of work for a little, short term benefit.

Agreed - mass spam backlinks barely move the needle anymore since Google mostly just ignores/disavows them algorithmically. The bigger negative SEO risks now are content scraping, hijacked backlinks, and fake DMCA takedowns. Regular Search Console checks and backlink audits are still the best defense.
