No Clients, No Portfolio. How Can I Start?

one thing that helped me early on... pick a couple businesses you'd actually want as clients and treat the concept redesign like a real brief. give it a fake budget, fake deadline, work inside those limits. ended up looking way more real than the polished dribbble stuff cause it had constraints.

and dont stress about volume. 3 strong pieces in one niche beats 10 random ones. nobody scrolls past the first few anyway.

the loom angle works but yeah dont do it for every business or youll burn out. batch the designs, only record for the ones you plan to pitch. half of them wont even open the email so save your energy for the portfolio first.

bidding low on fiverr like @CheapAndBest suggested is usually a trap. you end up dealing with nightmare clients who want the world for twenty bucks and it ruins your motivation.

@JaxonWP has the right idea with the concept redesigns but take it a step further. find 3 local businesses with awful design, redesign a key asset for them, and send it over. if they buy it, cool, you got a client. if they ignore you, just upload it to your portfolio as a concept case study anyway. prospective clients just want to see how you think, they rarely check if the invoice was actually paid...

I don't know your skills, but do the small jobs of the clients you're targeting in your area for free and send offers for what your clients are missing.

the concept redesign advice is solid but one thing nobody mentioned... present it right. dont just dump the final image. show the before, a line or two on what was broken, then your fix. that little bit of context makes a fake project read like real work cause it shows you actually think through problems not just push pixels.

also niche it hard early on. if you want restaurant clients your portfolio should be like 4 restaurants, not a logo, a wedding invite and a random app screen. people hire specialists in their head even when they say they want a generalist.

and yeah skip fiverr race to the bottom. done that, its miserable, you spend more energy managing cheap clients than actually designing.

Skip the free work trap. Instead, pick a specific niche and redesign the branding of real local businesses with bad assets. Put these concept projects into your portfolio as case studies, adding 2–3 lines explaining the business problem you solved. Use Fiverr or Freelancer.com to bid low initially, secure your first reviews, and scale up from there

You should start making some samples before and have something to show to a client that is the most important thing . Start also with lower price to catch more clients until you build a brand and reputation

I want to get design clients, but most clients ask for a portfolio. How can I make a good portfolio if I have never worked with a real client before?
Start with your family business and show them your work, in fact whenever you out you can tell that person this design is not good I can make a good one for you. That's how you can approach a person.
