Hey guys, time for a quick update. The last few days have been quite a reality check.
The Good News: We are monetized! I finally got approved through a Google MCM partner (as i told you a few days ago) and the ads are live. Traffic-wise, things are actually looking solid. I did a deep dive into my GSC and Bing data, and the 80/20 rule is hitting hard: about 15-20 pages are driving 65% of my organic traffic. Traffic is also decreasing because of summer but that's fine. It's quite unlucky to be approved now but i'm still happy.
Interestingly, my interactive content (quizzes and timeline games) are my cash cows. On Bing, I’m practically owning the Contemporary History cluster (WW1, WW2, Cold War are all ranking in the top 4).
I've also updated my timeline game and sent a newsletter to my mailing list (about 350 contacts). These are the stats: 70/75% open rate, 3% click rate.
The Bad News: The Data (and tanking eCPMs) Just because you have traffic and ads doesn't mean you're printing money. Here is my monetization data from the last couple of days:
- June 13: €0.79 Gross / 61.88% Fill Rate / Viewability ~64%
- June 14: €1.70 Gross / 60.4% Fill Rate / Viewability ~62%
- June 15: €0.86 Gross / 44.6% Fill Rate / Viewability ~56%
Yeah, a massive drop. My "Top" banner viewability is hovering around an abysmal 43-50%, which means my eCPM for that slot is dropping to like €0.15. I also don't have exact analytics since they just gave me a few placements and had to make my own, this means that multiple placements convey into one.
The Big Struggle: The Competitor Layout vs. My Layout Here is where I’m losing my mind a bit. My main competitor ranks #1 everywhere and his site is an absolute Christmas tree of ads. He has a full site takeover (skin), leaderboards, 7 or 8 in-content ads, multiple sticky sidebars.
The Pivot: What I’m doing nextI have to accept that I can't copy the giant in my niche right now. I need efficiency, not volume. this is what i'm gonna do this week:
- AdSense Direct Approval: I just submitted the site for direct AdSense approval (using the ads.txt method to keep both reseller and direct lines open). If I get approved, I want to run a strict A/B test: 100% AdSense vs 100% current network to see who actually pays better for my demographic (mostly students).
- Internal Linking: I’m using my high-traffic interactive games to inject contextual internal links pointing to my Position 11-20 pages to push them onto Page 1.
- Building Topical Authority: Since search engines trust me on Contemporary History (Bing), I’m doubling down. Next articles in the pipeline: Russian Revolution, Totalitarianism, and Vietnam War, plus massive new quizzes for WW1 and the Cold War to boost time-on-page.
Has anyone else here had to actively
reduce their ad units to make more money? Would love to hear if stripping down a top-heavy layout actually rescued your RPMs.
Could you please help me find good placements for the ads? Do you have experience in this? Please let me know what you think. Thank you!
My goal is to earn 2 euro/day, so 60 a month. Probably I should just wait and see how it goes.
Thank you again for following my journey!
