[Journey] Growing a Historical Blog from 100 Clicks to 10k Clicks a Month

history is an interesting niche because it can build real topical authority if the content is structured well. the challenge is usually monetization, but traffic growth itself can be very realistic if you stay consistent and target the right long-tail topics.

starting from a fresh domain is slow, but if you keep publishing and improving older posts based on Search Console data, 10k clicks a month doesn't sound unrealistic at all.

Yes! I'm not having problems with traffic, I'm trying to stay consistent and it keeps growing, the real deal is monetization, but I'm hopeful I'll sort this out!

What can i say more than: keep going. Traffic growth is rarely linear... some of my best-performing articles sat almost unnoticed for months before suddenly taking off.

Also, building in a niche you're genuinely interested in helps a lot, as the writing process will not seem that boring for you.

History has something many niches don't.. which is evergreen demand. People will still be searching for historical events years from now on.

Tip: I'd focus less on AdSense for now and more on growing authority. Good luck with the journey!

thank you very much! I'll keep writing and adding new content as quizzes and history mini-games (which go viral on reddit and bring me recurring traffic).

I'm now stuck at DA 8 according to ahrefs, which is kind of annoying but it isn't something I care too much. What brings me joy is that websites are now starting to give me backlinks without me asking, which is wonderful!

I know that I shouldn't focus this much on adsense, but it became a personal rivalry between me and them haha, I can't give up!

Congrats on the progress @metlivewin. Honestly, getting rejected by adsense for low value content is just a rite of passage these days, especially with a custom CMS. Sometimes their bot struggles to crawl custom code setups properly and just defaults to that generic rejection.

I had a similar issue last year with a custom bootstrap site. Got rejected three times. I added a generic privacy policy, contact page, and a proper XML sitemap, and it got approved on the next loop.

Since you are in the Italian history niche, adsense display ads are going to pay pennies anyway. Have you thought about Amazon affiliates for book recommendations? Or since you do quizzes, maybe some print-on-demand merch once the traffic scales. Don't waste too much mental energy fighting Google's automated rejection loop right now, just keep building that traffic.
I've had plenty of time to realize that adsense rejection is very common! The custom cms could theoretically be an issue, but i'm pretty sure it really isn't: everything is optimized, with schema etc... I already have terms and conditions, privacy policy and cookie policy. Maybe I should try to optimize those but I'm not too sure.

I know it wouldn't pay much, but since I already have another website approved which has way less traffic than this one, i know that it actually pays more than i expected (considering the low views).

I've already tried with amazon affiliates but i believe that my visitors are mainly students, and they're not interested in buying books i use as sources for most of my articles. They closed my affiliate account because i didn't reach the minimum sales.

I've been thinking for some time about selling some print on demand merch such as posters (eg: map of rome etc) but i still have to make it and see how it does.

Thank you again for your interest in my journey

Yes things as not as easy as it seems... from past few months AdSense approval is kind of hard

Amazon affiliate is difficult.. If your target audience is students then you can try selling notes or paid quiz question papers something like that. I think you can get some success there some people are making good money using this.. capture audience on whatsapp groups and sell them

Best of Luck..

Guyssss I've been approved by googleeee!!! yaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy.
Yesterday I received an email from the agency i submitted the website to google with, which said that i've been approved through google mcm. yaaay.

I then immediately asked for the codes to implement them asap. Today they sent them to me, so once i got out from work, i put them on the website manually and they are working amazingly!!! It's not just google, it's a header bidding solution so atm it looks like the fillrate is really high! I'll keep you updated once I see the first impressions!!!!

Apart from this, visits are slowly going down, but there isn't much i can do, school finished last week here in italy, so of course there is less interest. But wow, I'm so happy, i also passed an exam yesterday so i can finally spend more time on the project now!

as i said, i'll keep you updated. Thank you again a lot for all the interest you're showing in my journey!!! Love you all

Hey guys, time for a quick update. The last few days have been quite a reality check.

The Good News: We are monetized! I finally got approved through a Google MCM partner (as i told you a few days ago) and the ads are live. Traffic-wise, things are actually looking solid. I did a deep dive into my GSC and Bing data, and the 80/20 rule is hitting hard: about 15-20 pages are driving 65% of my organic traffic. Traffic is also decreasing because of summer but that's fine. It's quite unlucky to be approved now but i'm still happy.

Interestingly, my interactive content (quizzes and timeline games) are my cash cows. On Bing, I’m practically owning the Contemporary History cluster (WW1, WW2, Cold War are all ranking in the top 4).
I've also updated my timeline game and sent a newsletter to my mailing list (about 350 contacts). These are the stats: 70/75% open rate, 3% click rate.

The Bad News: The Data (and tanking eCPMs) Just because you have traffic and ads doesn't mean you're printing money. Here is my monetization data from the last couple of days:
  • June 13: €0.79 Gross / 61.88% Fill Rate / Viewability ~64%
  • June 14: €1.70 Gross / 60.4% Fill Rate / Viewability ~62%
  • June 15: €0.86 Gross / 44.6% Fill Rate / Viewability ~56%
Yeah, a massive drop. My "Top" banner viewability is hovering around an abysmal 43-50%, which means my eCPM for that slot is dropping to like €0.15. I also don't have exact analytics since they just gave me a few placements and had to make my own, this means that multiple placements convey into one.

The Big Struggle: The Competitor Layout vs. My Layout Here is where I’m losing my mind a bit. My main competitor ranks #1 everywhere and his site is an absolute Christmas tree of ads. He has a full site takeover (skin), leaderboards, 7 or 8 in-content ads, multiple sticky sidebars.

The Pivot: What I’m doing nextI have to accept that I can't copy the giant in my niche right now. I need efficiency, not volume. this is what i'm gonna do this week:
  1. AdSense Direct Approval: I just submitted the site for direct AdSense approval (using the ads.txt method to keep both reseller and direct lines open). If I get approved, I want to run a strict A/B test: 100% AdSense vs 100% current network to see who actually pays better for my demographic (mostly students).
  2. Internal Linking: I’m using my high-traffic interactive games to inject contextual internal links pointing to my Position 11-20 pages to push them onto Page 1.
  3. Building Topical Authority: Since search engines trust me on Contemporary History (Bing), I’m doubling down. Next articles in the pipeline: Russian Revolution, Totalitarianism, and Vietnam War, plus massive new quizzes for WW1 and the Cold War to boost time-on-page.
Has anyone else here had to actively reduce their ad units to make more money? Would love to hear if stripping down a top-heavy layout actually rescued your RPMs.
Could you please help me find good placements for the ads? Do you have experience in this? Please let me know what you think. Thank you!
My goal is to earn 2 euro/day, so 60 a month. Probably I should just wait and see how it goes.

Thank you again for following my journey!

Nice progress. I agree that consistency and and updating older content can make a big difference over time. I want to know did most of your traffic come from publishing new articles or from improving posts that were already getting some impressions at search console.

Thank you! Most of my traffic is actually coming from new content, mainly quizzes and just a few articles. This is because they're the ones i actually rank for in the first positions.

Today, after less that a day since my request, I've been approved by Google AdSense. I've now spent the entire day creating and placing ads on the website! This afternoon I made 0.36 cents. I'll see how it goes the next days!

Buongiorno,
Don’t you use the automatic adsense placement for ads?

Could you please share how much revenue you are able to generate from the amount of traffic you get now?
About the quizzes, are they a part of the articles or a completely separate stuff that you just promote on Reddit?

Do you try to automate Reddit or just engage organically?

No, I don't like automatic placement, and since i coded my own cms, i prefer to insert manually the ads where i think they can perform better! I use auto ads just for anchor and interstitial!

I still don't have enough data to know exactly how much I can make, give me a few days and I'll be glad to tell you!
I both have "independent" quizzes, which bring me most of the traffic from google, then I also have a quiz inside each article. For example: I have a quiz about Modern History, with 10 questions and then 15 faqs linking to some of my articles. Then let's say I have an article about the carolingian empire, at the end of the page I have a small quiz with 3 questions about the article.

I have not tried automating reddit and so far I just don't engage at all. Everything is from seo. I know I probably should start promoting the site on reddit, but I don't really love the idea of spamming!

Cool, I really like how you handle quizzes.

Oh, I thought I read in the thread that you use Reddit. Nevermind

It seems that since the quizzes have a lot of engagement you could try creating some actuall quiz mini apps. Maybe Telegram mini game where you reach audience, and then through the game convert them to visit your articles. :)

Are you using fresh domain or aged domain for this?
fresh domain! I registered it in may 2025! Then only started working on it in october!

Anyway guys, since i put the adsense ads, i've made almost 9 euros. It's almost 1 euro daily (0.75-0.90 it depends). I'm very happy with the page rpm which is about 2.50
