What is one SEO tactic you were skeptical about until it worked?

Every SEO has encountered strategies they doubted at first what tactic, ,method or optimization surprised you the most after seeing real-world results and why were you initially skeptical about it?

At one time, I underestimated internal linking. I knew about it and inserted links to similar articles. But later I learned to highlight several main pages, and also to build structure and clusters around these pages. And it is better to pass weight to these pages exactly from the homepage of your site.
And yes, it started to bring results. In 3 months, the average position changed from 26.7 to 7.4, and CTR grew by 2.2%.
So my answer is internal linking and clustering.

for me it was updating old content instead of always writing new stuff. I was skeptical at first because felt like wasted effort. But had few posts stuck on page 2 for months so decided to try it, expanded thin sections and fixed outdated info on one post.within 3 weeks that page jumped from position 14 to position 6 without any new backlink. After that I started doing content audits every month and honestly it give more consistent results than publishing fresh content

One that surprised me was updating old content instead of constantly publishing new content. Early on, I assumed growth came from creating more pages. I was skeptical that revisiting existing articles could move the needle much.

Then I saw pages jump significantly in rankings after improving content depth, updating outdated information, fixing search intent mismatches, and strengthening internal links. In some cases, a few hours spent improving an existing page produced better results than publishing several new articles.

It changed how I think about SEO. Sometimes the biggest opportunity isn't creating something new. It's making your best existing content genuinely better than what's currently ranking.

Interlinking. It's like magic when done right.

one way in which I have managed to change my way of thinking is through the optimization of existing content instead of generating new page. sometime, all that is needed is some minor tweak nd better internal linking.

Proper internal linking can make a bigger difference than expected by improving crawling and helping important pages rank better.
