Personally, I think a compromise approach would be better:，First, conduct basic keyword research ，identify topics with search demand ，write high-quality content ，continue optimizing after launch.

Yes keyword research is necessary because it determines the profitability and traffic of your website or blog. If people aren't searching for target keywords you use, you will less traffic and even less conversions money wise.

Keyword research is the first thing you need to learn when it comes to SEO, if you dont know what people are searching for, then you wont find any path to start with.

Both camps are right depending on your goal. If you're building a passion project or testing an idea, start writing and let the content find its audience — you can retrofit keyword strategy later. But if you're building a niche site with monetization in mind from day one, keyword research upfront saves enormous wasted effort. The real mistake is writing 50 posts around topics with no search volume and realizing 6 months later you were talking to nobody.
 
Agree with rikn on this. Going in without keyword research is just guessing. Even a basic free pass through Ahrefs or Google Search Console to see what's actually getting searched before you commit to a content direction saves a lot of wasted work. The people who say "just write and optimize later" usually have authority built up already — for a new blog with zero domain history, starting without targeting real demand makes an uphill climb even steeper.

Keyword research is important, especially for a new blog, because it helps you understand what people are searching for. However, content quality is just as important. My approach is to do basic keyword research first, then create helpful content around that topic. You can improve SEO later, but starting with some keyword research usually makes it easier to attract the right audience and rank faster.
 
I think it depends on what you're trying to achieve with the blog If you're just writing about topics you're passionate about then keyword research isn't always necessary in the beginning. But if your goal is to get traffic from Google, it definitely helps to know what people are searching for I've seen many bloggers create good content but it never gets much attention because the topics had very little search demand

I think everyone has come across it. You research, look for keywords, and categorize them

- target

- related

- broad

- general

You can’t rely on just one. People can find you through both target and near-target queries. Exact match or broad match. All of these types are very important

And if you want to find out whether a word is popular enough, there are free resources like Google Trends and Google Ads Planner, as well as other tools that let you check a keyword’s popularity
 
I think some keyword research is essential before you start. Great content is important, but if nobody is searching for the topic, it's much harder to get traffic no matter how well the article is written.
