It isn't that strange to point PBN links to a blog post that they made informational and people found useful? The outbound links from that post are to some authoritative sites as well as internally to pages they want to rank. Internal link juice siloing can be effective.
Make sure that you are posting on sites that can send you referral traffic. Relevance, link juice and user behavior will benefit you way more than randomly posting on a "strong" domain.
Do you ever see the improvement have a positive effect then go negative? ie does it lose juice over time and ever take you back to a worse position than when you started the 301
