Did you build a custom 404/410 page and place links on it? Did you rebuild the linking structure in the site? How did it work out for you?

Well if i understand it properly 301ing just passes the penalty through to the end url. So i was thinking 404 and then make new urls, rebuild the internal link structure. Thoughts?
