My advice is - keep it simple and stick to one tool/technique.
If you are hesitating I will definately advice you to invest a bit money in a tool. I normally use aHref which gives you a greate data. Then you could just extract yhe URLs (domains or target pages) of your "competitors"...
You still could have the product name in the URL extension. And bear in mind that this is not always so powerful and it could look spammy to SEs if you use spammy-look subdomains ;)

I would say that you still need some qualitative content on your root domain homepage. Your DA depends on it so, all your pages will be dependent on its "popularity" and authority. Bear in mind also the Google Layout Update - use content but do not fullfill it with pictures or...

You could freely use 302. It will redirect the users and the spiders, but not the links. So, in case you've already have spammy links they won't affect your new domain.
Furthermore, you could disavow all of them by Google Disavow tool. Just in case.
