Thanks for the inspiring thread OP! When you talk about promoting your sites, what do you mean exactly? Are you talking about the regular process of writing articles and waiting for them to rank higher or is it active promotion like using Adwords or social media?

I believe FB did move some things recently. Just to double check you're in the right place- from your page, click 'Edit Page' under the main photo, then in the left navigation select 'Manage Permissions'. In the middle section of the resulting page, you should see the 'Default Landing Tab' option.

Depends on the complexity of the site: Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, Notepad++, Dreamweaver, Photoshop. The last two have good open source alternatives that I use from time to time Nvu (Dreamweaver) and Gimp (Photoshop).
