I think by "they" you mean google? If so this is just the number that google voice will forward the calls and SMS too. This will not effect what you are trying to accomplish. Hope this helps and I am understanding you correctly.

Any reason that you can't set up a google voice number? I don't know about your exact situation but I imagine Google voice could be used as a work around.
