You are spot on here. It's terribly annoying to go through past articles to add links. My previous SEO lead chose this method, and now I have to keep it up. The results are great though. Still waiting for yoast to add the h2 option, but seems they aren't particularly interested.
Our site has over 500 articles in FAQ style using H2 to replace the <strong> attribute with Yoast FAQ schema question/answers. No drops at all, actually increased. Internal linking is very solid, keywords come from Ahrefs, studying the SERPs, and a litlte creative thinking about what people need...
Well for most of those 2-years I've been following somebody else's instructions. Now I have to do the creative thinking myself, which is why I've realized I need to practice applying that knowledge. Thanks!
