Focus on long-tail keywords if your site is new and build out good content. Once you start ranking, aim for replacing posts that rank on page 1 and suck. Make sure you're promoting and building links for your content as well. No real secret. Just quality work and promotion.

Starting small is not thinking small. Get a solid foundation and build up from there-that's the key to real, long-term success in anything.
