If you are new to the game, all of the direct navigation (type in traffic domains) are gone. You might get lucky with one or two, but don't quit your day job. Used to be domain tasting and massive domain name portfolios with daily traffic you could just sit on. That's all consolidated.

Depends on whether your motivation is aftermarket domain sales or just straight PPC. IMO, an extra few bucks per months isn't as attractive as when the domain has a higher chance of selling because of a well placed "For Sale" link on the landing page, or a cohesive checkout process.
Definitely still profit in this business, not only from direct navigation domain names (with type in traffic) but from search arbitrage traffic as well. We currently have a good sized direct navigation portfolio that makes solid passive income.
